skate journal: sauls / saulside / chicken bowl / something (may 30, 2017)

Biked over to Saul’s after a nap on a beautiful night. Had a few warm up runs then we went to move a hot tub. An hour or so later we were back and it was time to skate. The crew was Dave, Will, Saul, Peewee and me. Dave killed it. He does so many really long lines now with so many different tricks. The long grinds back 50s and 5-0s out of the hip transfer are amazing. The front 5-0s, the manuals, all of the old school plants. So good. Will is a quiet killer. Front smiths, chink chinks, switch 50s all in long runs with speed. Saul front slashed the bricks first try, long runs of linked slashes done really fast, and can have a conversation doing axle stalls. Ha ha. Peewee rips with a casual style. Lots of ollies, long grinds and flow. The opposite of me. Carve grinds have become one of my favorite tricks ever. I also got some axle stalls, little grinds, and it was really really fun.

Jake and I rolled to 303 then went to Civic Park to meet up with Matt, Nate and Chad. Warming up didn’t go as well as I wanted. I felt pretty sore. I had setup a new board. A Jack 8.25. And it felt good. A setup I was finally happy with the whole day. Jake and I tried to get warmed up on the little ledges for awhile. He got tailslides. I did some switch noseslides. Kickflips and fakie flips happened. Chad then Matt then Nate showed. Nate was killing it out of the gate as usual. Matt missed his first 5 treflips. Unheard of! He would get some of course though. After awhile we went down to the new area which is super fun. I took forever to get a manual then crook grind which Jake did way before me. Nate slammed super hard trying to manual a narrow ledge. Chad did some fast manuals then had some ankle pain kick in and took off. Matt and Nate had quick bonks a ledge and Matt did back tails on the ledge. Matt had another sick line with ollie a ledge then front tail to fakie. I had a really slow line of switch nose jib then nollie front tail. It was fun though. It rained for a bit so we sat in the covered area. Then Nate jumped up after sitting for awhile and wanted to play a game of SKATE. My legs weren’t ready and I didn’t commit to a single flip trick so I was out first. Matt ended up taking it and we were skating the two little ledges again. I got a back 50 and some switch noseslides. It was fun. Nate was doing super fast front tailslides and nollie front 5-0s and nollie noseslides. Jake front tails. Matt was chilling and filming the gnar. Ha. Then we got the boot and checked out the nearby wallies which Nate did. Then called it a day.

skate journal: broomfield park with dave then some safeway blah (may 28, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on May 31st, 2017 by corpo

Met Dave at Broomfield park on a bright, sunny day. The park was mostly empty when I first got there. I felt motivated, but was on the big setup from the night before (with even bigger wheels) and it felt a little weird. Nothing really stands out, but I did more ollies than I have in awhile. Dave was shredding on a 7.75. Back 50s on the black ledge, front tail on the steep bank, back 50 nollie shove blue ledge, bigspins on flat, front nosegrind the blue ledge in a long line and the sick back nosegrind to end it! We also tried treflips for awhile. I couldn’t put my feet on it, the board would land upside down. I did my first front 50 shove in awhile on the little blue ledge. Had some noseslides on the brown ledge that felt good, struggled on the quartapotty. It was a fun session. Then I went over to Safeway ledge. I had gotten incredibly stiff/sore in the 3 minute drive so I had to completely warm up again. I basically just did some 50s both ways. Front 50s felt really good.

skate journal: garage fun (may 27, 20170

Posted in Skate Journal on May 28th, 2017 by corpo

Went into the garage on a wet night after spending the day with the family and my mom. I started with manuals. Those were good. Then I setup the “ledge” and started doing the cheater nosegrinds 180s. Those felt cool. Then I started trying the cheater nosegrind shove which I eventually landed. I did some kickflips in between. Regardless of how dorky the the cheater part of it is, I was stoked. I ended trying some treflips, but didn’t get any.

skate journal: quick cruise on the bike path (may 26, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on May 27th, 2017 by corpo

trying to get more on the pattern of skating at least a little every day. I pushed/walked up the bike path. Tried nose stall to fakie on the flower pot ledge at the park which actually took a few tries. In fact I almost had some bad slams. It was annoying. Then I pushed down the hill and it was fun. Ollied some manholes on the road back and that was that.

skate journal: 360 flips in the garage (may 25, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on May 27th, 2017 by corpo

On a rainy night I went into the garage to mess around. I did a few manuals then some ollies and a kickflip or two. Then I grabbed the putter and went at it with 360 flips for awhile. Maybe 30 minutes. It took awhile before I committed. I was wearing some old Lakai vulcs wanting extra board feel and I was on the putter. I ended up landing like 10 with my hands down before finally getting this “clean” one. I don’t care, it felt awesome and was the first one in a few months.

skate journal: dog park before work (may 24, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on May 24th, 2017 by corpo

Woke up super early and couldn’t fall back asleep. So I got up and did some yoga then hit the dog park. Well actually, I intended to go to Boulder park, but when I pulled in there was like 5 kids skating and I wanted to be alone. Dog park was chill because the parking lot was closed. I started off better than I thought considering I was on the big board. I started with the basics and worked up. Ollie, nollie, switch ollie, fakie ollie. Then all 8 shoves. Man some of them were so bad. Then all 8 180s. Then kickflips which were working better on the big board than the small one. I was still skating incredibly slow though. Got fakie fip and halfcab flip. Was trying backside flip when I saw the time and I had to split in 5 minutes. So I posed 360 flip and switch front heels. Didn’t commit to either, but really only tried for a couple of minutes.

Then after work I met Dave at Wilville on a beautiful evening. I skated there. I was sore from already skating, but I wanted to try and power through it. Warming up seemed like it might be possible. We did some tricks on flat and then tried manuals on the top part of the middle bank. I was messing around with switch 180 to manual while Dave was trying manual. We got the boot though. Doh. I got a nose manual on the way out (I think). So we wandered around for awhile and my soreness kicked in. We skated the little curb at the base of Spanish Towers. It kind of sucked. Ha ha. We ended up back at Wilville. We messed around out front for awhile. Dave rolled in on a bigger bank. I posed bonelesses. Then Dave went back for the nose manual and got it. Then he did the gnarly bank roll ins back to back with a slide between. It was sick. I almost died rolling into the second one. Then we hit the boardslide for awhile. I thought I was done, but Dave hyped me up to keep trying. I ended up getting a boardslide even after a few scary first attempts. Dave did 50s, boardslide transfer, a lot. I tried front board transfers, didn’t quite get one. Then we bounced. Glad I worked through the soreness.

skate journal: campus blah (may 23, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on May 24th, 2017 by corpo

On a coolish night I went to campus feeling tired. I was hoping skating would change that. I started with a few dorky whatever nose jibs then got a slappy crook or two and moved on. I tried some kickflips on flat as I rolled ..

.. to this spot. I tried to do a bunch of flippers here, but I had almost none. The STFs did feel fast compared to the old Spitfires so that was weirding me out because I was trying to skate as slow as possible. Man I have no confidence these days. Almost no drive either. It’s like as soon as I can tell my legs aren’t up for it I just give up. I used to have more drive to get through it though. Anyway, I got shoves, kickflip (which took awhile ugh), fakie flip, halfcab flip. Tried 360 flips for awhile and came up empty handed. I landed on a couple. I also posed some switch front heels which were flipping, I just don’t know how to get my feet back on the board. I also did a few stall tricks on the first stair. Then I moved into campus a little more. I was near the hill tunnel, but just kind of gave up on skating. I really don’t like 8″ high ventures.

skate journal: garage manuals then some “ledge” tricks (may 22, 2017)

Posted in New Shoes, Skate Journal on May 23rd, 2017 by corpo

Went out to the garage feeling pretty sore, but kind of wanting to skate more again and deal with the pain like I used to. It almost seems like being constantly sore is better than the sore I get after a few day break. I had put some old STFs on instead of Spits and started the new shoe break in period on some new PJs (this time with “Hyperfeel” like grooves that I cut into the sole for added flexibility). I did the no pop manuals for awhile first, then some regular manuals. Then I skated the pink bench top for awhile. It actually took a few tries to commit to back 50 over the corner. Kind of sad, but whatever. Then I did a few front 50s and was out.

Dave and I filled in our brackets after the first round was done.

Dave’s is above, mine is below. (In case it’s not totally obvious since you know I would pick PJ to win it)
