skate journal: solo early broomfield then safeway (aug 20, 2017)

Wanted to hang with the kids so I went to Broomfield park before they woke up. Now that may sound really early, but actually I left around 9am and they were still sleeping. Teenagers. There was already someone there going for a #bftriple when I got there. It was hot again. I felt better than the day before and credit ibuprofen for that. I had taken my bigger setup with me too. 8.38 with Venture wides. The trucks felt loose and kind of awesome. I didn’t do my normal flow for warm up because I didn’t want to get in the way. But things worked. I have completely lost back 50s so one goal was to get a back 50 on the blue box without cheating and going over the corner. I got a couple. Well technically they were grinds, but more like stalls that grinded a little. Oh well one trick off the list for the day. The next was fakie 50 which took fewer tries. Couldn’t get a fakie nosegrind. Had some crooks on the black ledge, front 50s. Boneless over the tiny bar is always fun. I tried a line of kickflip on the hump (kind of a frontside flip, but not really), front 180 into the mellow bank then halfcab noseslide on the black ledge. Never quite got the halfcab noseslide. The park got more crowded, I wanted some shade so I left to Safeway ledge.

I was sore, but was hyped on shade and grinding a real ledge. i got a few back 50s early that felt great. I had a goal of 10 tricks without the silly no-ollie noseslides. I got front 50, front 5-0, back 50, a lame-but-new back 50 front 180 out where I turned off the front truck, a halfcab noseslide that felt good, what I thought was a front smith, but clearly is not. Got into front crooks for the first time in awhile, came close to fakie 50 (the close wall weirds me out). I didn’t try much for flip tricks. Went home to hang with the fam around noon.

Met Dave at Broomfield park a lot later than I said I would. I was very sore from skating flat and then swimming the night before. So it took me awhile to get going. Rob showed about the time that Dave started trying the line above. It didn’t take Dave long to get it. Jake showed around then too. It was getting hot fast. Rob’s legs weren’t up to par and he wisely bounced. I wish I was able to listen to my body like that, but instead I stubbornly battled soreness and heat, but did have fun. The ollie onto the blue box then boardslide down the parking block was fun. Dave did it down the box he boardslide it up. Jake warmed up quickly with a 3 trick line of manual to boardslide, every try blunt to fakie on the quartapotty then fakie back tail on the blue box. During that time I was trying a dream line of kickflip out of the bank, kickflip to fakie on the hump, halfcab flip into the bank. I didn’t get far, only landed a couple of the first kickflips. I was bumming on how unstable my setup felt. Darn high trucks. They just don’t feel right on an 8.25. Dave had some action going on in the corner involving the steep bank, but I didn’t see. We played a game of SKATE that Jake won. He gets me letters on treflip every time now. Argh. I did have a few tricks that felt alright. Then we got some food and came back to see Jack and Carleigh ripping. There were a bunch of others too working on their #bftriple lines and it was a blast to watch. It got me hyped. But I was really sore and it was super hot out.

poser of the month

Got out of work pretty early and went to the Dog Park. It was hot. I had about 20-30 minutes before Dave showed and believe it or not, skating was working. I don’t remember my first warm up run, but I got to a point quickly where I was trying halfcab flip, heelflip, kickflip, nollie treflip. I never got the nollie treflip, but I did land a nollie 3 shove on accident. Ha ha. Also got some bad f/s halfcab flips, struggled with fakie flips. Didn’t really try treflips. Dave had a cab, front shoves (we both struggled with), a bunch of fakie shoves as his warm up, bigspins galore, tried a lot of different tricks. Then we kind of hung in the painted area and did slow attempts at harder tricks for us. I tried varial heel for awhile and got really close. They were flipping nice. Dave was trying treflips and getting close then varial heels and got close and then treflips again and got close. He had a line I can’t remember now. Started with kickflip and had a back big in it. He tried on my board for a bit and got super close to a treflip. One of these days it’ll happen Dave!
