skate journal: brief mess around and some switch pushing (sept 21, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 21st, 2017 by corpo

After a day of work that totally drained me I sat around for a long time and did nothing. Shortly before dark Ollie and I rolled over to the school. Ollie learned little cali grinds as we rolled past the oval. We messed around with b/s 180s a little in the back then ended up on the basketball court having fun passing the ball back and forth as we skated. Then I skated off to the beer store pushing switch. I had a fun bikepath ride on the way back.

skate journal: fun at saul’s then frustration at research ledge (sept 20, 2017)

Posted in New Deck, New Shoes, Skate Journal on September 21st, 2017 by corpo

After a busy day at work, a nap and some dinner I finally got to Saul’s with a new deck and new wheels (Monico 8.3 and Spitfire 52 radials). I was hyped when I arrived and Jake was there too. The bowl looked so fun, it’s been too long. Jake was going for a long run when I got there that involved a blunt to fakie at the end. It had feeble grind, front 5-0, tailblock, etc before it. Saul had already skated earlier in the day and was still getting it. Hell yeah. His runs with the quick carve grinds are amazing to watch. So fast. I took a few tries to get a carve grind again, but when I did I had it and it felt sooooo fun. A few years ago I learned slappy crooks which have become one of my favorite tricks ever. I would put carve grinds up there too. Somehow with my new setup I kept ending up doing rock fakies in the shallow and after a tail stall I would be setup perfectly for the hip. So I went with it and several tries later got a very sketchy/slow shallow to deep 50 over the hip. I definitely lifted onto my front truck and stuff, but whatever, it felt so rad. A bit later Saul did a sitting kickflip. It was rad. Jake has a tendency to bet me a ‘cider’ to land a trick. He often ends up owing me a cider, but I never take him up on it. Anyways, I told him he would have a clean slate if he landed the blunt to fakie. 4 tries later he did it. So sick! And then he was out. Saul went at the hip for a bit too. We did it after rolling in then axle stalls, it’s the perfect angle. Things got a little sketchy as it got dark so we called it. Fun night, I want to skate there more. I wish life wouldn’t get in the way all the time.

I was supposed to do some errands, but I wanted to grind more. I went to the default of the research ledge. I was happy leaving Saul’s, but the hype would quickly fade. They have these buses running all of the time there now. So every 5 minutes a bus leaves and a new one pulls up. It’s annoying and it added to my frustrations. In fact my first noseslide attempt was terrible and my board shot under a bus. I had to climb under it and get my board. I should have known to leave right then, but I’m stubborn. Never got a boardslide pop out. Got noseslide and noseslide to fakie. Got a couple terrible back 50s with lots of tic tacs, first try crooks, but then couldn’t do it again. The worst halfcab noseslides. A front board pop out first try. But could never get a front 50. The ledge is getting chunky. It’s not fun anymore, every trick is a battle and the buses make it even worse. I think I’m going to say RIP to this ledge. I need to go to start driving to parks when I want to skate a ledge. Boulder doesn’t have any ledges. Ugh. I went home bummed on the ledge, but hyped on Saul’s. Maybe I am finally starting to like transition skating.

skate journal: messing around at the school with ollie (sept 19, 2017)

After dinner Ollie and I skated over to the school. You know, like 20 feet or 1 push. We messed around in the basketball court area for awhile. Ollie did the step off hipping jump over a bunch which I can’t do. But I did come close to just doing a regular hippy jump which Ollie was impressed with. We did some skating while shooting hoops, some tricks, but nothing tech. We ended up in the back where I was pleased to see mini-tables being put together. We skated the super tiny bank. Ollie did his f/s halfcab and I did a kickflip. Ollie had gotten close to no comply 180s earlier on then started getting them. I filmed one. It was cool. I also did a wallie/nollie and then we bounced hitting the curb cuts a few times on the way out. I skated flat for a bit again. I didn’t land much, but I was happy trying.

skate journal: school stalls then some flatground (sept 18, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 18th, 2017 by corpo

After a long day with jury duty and a nap or two I went to the school not really expecting much. Some people were playing basketball on the new court so I went in the back to check out some rocks. I tried to warm up with some stalls and was getting into them when a neighbor walking here dog decided to talk to me and make me feel weird about skating these rocks. Ugh. The rocks are good though and would be really good for me to keep trying to ollie up onto them. I hit the basketball court for a minute after that, but there were pebbles and lumps everywhere. So I skated in front of the house for awhile. Started okay with kickflip, pop shove, halfcab flip first try. But struggled with fakie flip and then fakie bigflip. I did get a great feeling treflip though and a first try b/s flip. Came close to frontside halfcab heel. Man I wish these shoes would die, but I think the’ll last forever.

skate journal: trinidad with jack, garrett, hayden AND MONICO! (sept 17, 2017)

Jack and Hayden met at my house at 7am and after swooping Garrett up in Denver we were off to Trinidad to meet up with Monico. We met there because it’s halfway for both of us. We arrived at the park to Monico with his camera pointed at us and Elton John playing. Cracked us up. Hugs and board exchanges later we hit the park. We started in the lower part. Man that park is wild. Weird lumpy transitions with cracks and holes in spots. I didn’t skate down there much, mostly just posed and watched the ripping. Jack did some cool nose stalls going up the bank to hubba, kickflip nose stall first try. A couple broken decks later he was chilling. Ha. Garrett flowed, but wasn’t feeling it too much either. Monico was jumping on the rails/hubba right away and doing flippers all over the place. Man he’s good. Hayden popped some lofty b/s ollies on the oval lump, airs over snowboard jump, grinds and apparently jumped over Monico when they were trying to film lines.

Then we skated the ‘street’ section. It would have been more fun for me had the first step not been mostly wet. I had some fun 50s and came somewhat close to a slow switch front crook. Hayden’s nose manual is ridiculous. Garrett never quite got the line, but the Powell Magic is funny either way. Monico was shredding so hard. The 180s up and switch/fakie tricks off came quick. The front 50 up the weird corner ledge took a minute, but wow.

We left the park looking for some street spots. I joked how we should find a 15 stair for Monico. Well to my surprise a few minutes later we did. And he skated it! It was surreal to there filming Monico get buck. Well, I didn’t really film because my daughter had taken the memory card out of the camera and forget to put it back. Argh. Luckily Jack got a killer angle. Thanks Jack.

After a stop at Zumiez so Jack could be an Independent shirt (ha) we hit Pueblo CSU. Jack setup a new board, Garrett and Hayden played on the ledge area and I went to go skated this little bank spot. They all came and joined me. That thing is so fun. I was doing lots of back 5-0s, took awhile to get some front 5-0s, posed some front nosegrinds and back hurricanes. Hayden did some crazy bluntslide combos. The bluntslide body varial was crazy. He also did no comply tailslide easily too. Garrett had some blunts too, tailslides, and posed the photo above. Jack was struggling then did a b/s flip nosegrind like it was nothing. Amazing. I think he got a noseblunt too. We skated this bench to bank area. Jack got a sick manual popped into the bank, Hayden with a crazy fastplant then hardflip. Garrett got a nose manual, but cheated the landing a little. I posed some 360 no complys out. Man I felt bad.

Then we hit the newer Pueblo park. It’s pretty neat, but most of the stuff we all wanted to skate is right in the same area. Jack and I were really struggling. I came super close to focusing my board. It took me 20 tries to get a front 50 on the tiny bank to curb. Garrett was ripping. Solid basics that look good. Front tail, front noseslides. Hayden did some really crazy stuff. The front noseslide bonk thing, wallie 50s, 5-0 t fakie the China bank. Last thing I tried was a back 50 on it that took too long. I guess I at least went over the hip thing. Jack shut it down with manual up, manual down kickflip out then later ollie up kickflip to switch manual down. So sick. Fun day with the Nullers. We got a good thing going.

skate journal: crowded triple nipple then motts with saul and ollie (sept 16, 2017)

Super random and awesome day with @ollie.gillingham and @skateboard_chicken

Slept in for once on a Saturday which is 8:15 am these days. Felt nice. My nuts were fine, but somehow I actually hurt my right ankle yesterday. Not bad enough to prevent me from skating, but enough to need additional stretching in the morning. Saul biked over and we piled into my car with Ollie. We went to Triple Nipple which was surprisingly crowded. This made warming up in the cooler weather even harder. Ollie and I played on the little qp up top a lot where we did the double front rocks. Ollie also did rock ‘n roll and halfcab over the hip. He skated around the park and didn’t seem too bothered with the masses. I struggled to get it together, took a long time to get a tiny crook on the ledge. Saul was bummed on the crowd too. It wasn’t like people were jerks or anything, we knew a lot of them, it’s just a small park and hard to skate when it’s crowded. I saw him hit some fun lines though which is exactly what that park is about.

After a 303 / donut stop we randomly chose the Mott’s. When we got there Ric and Christian were there. So sick. As well as a few other rippers. Ollie only took two runs in the bowl. Saul was quick on long grinds like it was nothing. I get thrown off by the tile. My brain thinks as soon as I hit it I’m on the coping. So it took awhile to get a few little grinds, but I had fun. Ric was shredding. Grinds over the hips, smiths. Christian makes transition looks really fun. Ha. He can do all kinds of grinds/slides anywhere. Seeing the Mott’s skate was rad too. Ashley is killing it so soon after having a baby. Those two are good people. Then we needed to bounce.

Before work trick tip: How to sack yourself on a ledge going slow. #ouch #

A post shared by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

Woke up early on a Friday when I have the late shift at work (9:30am). I decided to hit Erie park hoping it would be empty (it was) and got there a little before 8am. There was some puddles from spinklers, but it was mostly perfect. Warming up was of course a battle being so early, but probably went better than expected. After a few tiny ollies and boardslides I started to try some stuff. Got a line with crooks on the main long ledge, kickflip on flat then manual the little box. I would end up getting a lot of crooks, that ledge is great. I had a lot of fun doing little ollies to fakie and fs/bs ollies on the banks around the park. I was actually surprised at how much fun I was having doing dorky little things throughout areas that normally have people flying through. I had an ollie up a level that felt great and made me happy I chose to ride a big board again. Ollies to fakie on the banks were feeling great. Couldn’t get a cheater back 50 on the tiny box. On the main ledge I ended up getting a few tricks. Noseslide, noseslide to fakie, boardslide, front board, the worst front nose ever, switch noseslide, switch front nose, halfcab noseslide, crooks and happy to say a couple little front 50s. I just haven’t been able to pop that trick at all lately so it felt cool to get a couple even if that was it. The last challenge was to noseslide a taller ledge into the bank. I setup my phone for extra courage as I was scared and I wanted a screengrab for the blog. I got one, but wanted to clean it up and the next one didn’t go so good. I got sacked pretty good. At least t’s funny to watch.

Late night mission for me. Meaning 8:30pm. Ha ha. I had put together the complete I had in Cali again and put myself on probation – no more changes for a month. I went to the ledge wanting to work on the basics. Got a couple really bad back 50s, was near 100% on crooks. Also got noseslide, noseslide fakie, boardslide, switch front nose, switch front nose to forward, a completely terrible halfcab noseslide. Didn’t really skate it uphill. Maybe just a switch noseslide. Didn’t do much for flippers, mostly because I couldn’t land a fakie flip.

skate journal: northside struggles with such great people (sept 13, 2017)

Got to hang with two of my favorite dudes in the 🌎 tonight! Thanks for ruling @corpoglenny and @andy_weiss

A post shared by Chris Jones (@sweetmalarkey) on

After work, driving, MRKT, Chipotle Dave and I rolled to Northside for only my second time being there after dark. The lights are really good except on the ledge. The crew there was so sick. Hayden, Jaeson, Andy, Chris and many more. Trying to skate was super hard and painful so I mostly just talked for awhile which was fun. I filmed Hayden a little. Tried to get going in the back corner with little hump ollies and barrier axle stalls. Chris Jones had some sick tailslides on the china bank, bonelesses, boardslides, more. Andy was rolling in everywhere, almost got kickflip pivot on the weird bank that gets steep at the end. Dave was all over the place. He said later he was struggling, but he was ripping as far as I could tell. Pivot/transfers on the barriers, manuals, slappy feebles, much more. I finally at least tried hard for awhile with a line of wallie, little slash the china bank then alley oop kickflip on the bank. Got close. Andy and Chris were gonna leave, but instead we all started trying 360 flips on flat. Andy was first. Chris was second. Dave and I never got one. I came close, but I’m not 70 years old so landing 270 with both hands down doesn’t count. I was incredibly frustrated with my skating and my setup, but seeing all of those dudes was great.

Went across the street after an active day ( swimming, gym, basketball, work) wanting to skate a little and check out the new area. It was darker than I had hoped. The little wallride area is cool though. Did a few of these, never really did them on an actual wall before.
