Brief curb session with @fullertrron while the ❄️ melts.

A post shared by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

So I went with 8.25 and the wide trucks, got new wheels and it felt great. I had the day off work with some time before my flight to Seattle. Dave stopped by for a lunch skate and we went to the curb across the street. I felt good right out of the gate. It was kind of surprising. We were both trying a lot of lines. Up curbs, down curbs, grinds, slides, flippers. It was cool. Dave had kickflip, manual front 180 out, 50s, back 50 nollie shove out, no ollie tailslides and some good back 5-0s when I wasn’t taking a photo. I tried front 180 a puddle, fakie flip on flat, fakie 50 a curb, but never got the fakie 50. Had 50s, intentional front 5-0s, hucked a bunch of tricks I haven’t done in awhile like kickflip front 50, switch crook, front nosegrind. I got a line of switch front 180 a puddle, kickflip back 50 then almost back 50 (ha ha, got the flip in, but not the easier version) and ended by landing a new trick in the slowest way possible. Front 5-0 no comply shove out.

Then after a bus ride and a flight #cloggingyourfeedwithstokepartdeux was on!   We went right to Jefferson skatepark.  Half of it was lit well, the other half was not.  There was also several youth hanging out tagging the park or vibing.  It was pretty cold, but it’s a different cold then CO.  It’s in the 50s, but humidity makes it cold.  Once you get warmed up it’s good.  We did our thing warming up.  Joe had done a few ledge tricks as had Josh.  Josh tried a couple fakie 50s and then Joe comes and shows him up with a first try fakie 50 shove out.  Take that Josh!  I took a few tries to get a back 50 on the qp over the ledge which was very fun. Even though the lower area wasn’t lit very well Josh was ollieing the kicker, doing lipslide transfers over the qp hip, beanplants, a lot more. I had a fun line of front 50 the lurb then noseslide the ledge into the bank. Joe did the fakie 50 into the bank so good. Josh took a break for a bit, I battled the front 50 over the qp which was scary at first and took quite a few tries. Thanks for filming it Josh! Then Josh and I did the doubles routine and Joe and I finished the night off with a frontside ledge into the bank session. And by that I mean Joe rattling off tricks like front 50 180, front lip to 50 while I took too long to do front 50. But the front 50 felt awesome. Fun first night.

HUF 001 wins last week

This is a sick edit. Their team is stacked. Brad Cromer is the best.

Runner up goes to Tom Asta. The switch heel front nose 270 shove screams PJ and I love it. Put some hip hop with the skating and this could have taken gold this week.

skate journal: garage setup madness (march 26, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 27th, 2018 by corpo

After flatground with Jake I had some madness going on. Not being able to land treflips or nollie treflips got to me. I knew I wanted to setup an 8.25″ for my next board, but wasn’t sure if I wanted to put the bigger trucks on. And since I’m leaving for Seattle in a day I had to figure it out. So I setup two 8.25s out of old decks/trucks/wheels in my garage. One with the lows I’ve been skating with the 8.1, and another with the wide trucks. The board with the lows was in somewhat decent shape, but the board with high trucks was terrible, warped and delaminating. I went through trick by trick comparing the two. At points I thought for sure I would stick with lows, but then the highs would feel better for the next trick. I did a kickflip on the low board and got real bad wheel bite and slammed. That kinda changed everything as I was sick of that. I had a good heeflip with the highs, came closer to tre and nollie tre, but couldn’t make halfcab heel seem possible. I could with the lows though. I had better ollies with the lows and their quick snap, but I went in after awhile and setup a new board on the 5.8 wides. Just in time for Seattle. Whew.

skate journal: dog park flatground with jake on a nice sunday (march 25, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 26th, 2018 by corpo

Feeling very sore I met up with Jake around noon at the Dog Park. Warming up wasn’t great. Jake was doing lines over the cone. Ollies, front 180s and halfcabs. I had a first try heelflip, but struggled to ollie the cone. Jake and I started a game of SKATE. But he broke his deck on a frontside flip make. So while he setup a new board that he had in the car I went for the cone ollie. Took quite a few tries, but I did get it and it felt awesome. Then we resumed our game. With added grip Jake was now able to get 360 flip (ha ha Jake). At one point I was up SK – SKAT with tricks like halfcab flip, heelflip, fakie flip, but he tied it up with a fakie 360 shove and something else. We both wanted to end on fakie tre, but gave up after awhile and tried some random tricks. Too my surprise I got a halfcab heel which Jake had never even tried before. It’s a rare thing for me to actually win against Jake so that was cool. Then we just kind of went slow trying new or rare tricks. Jake wanted a heelflip and wanted to learn fakie varial flip, but never quite got either. I don’t think I put down anything either even though I came close to an awful lot. Was most bummed on how I couldn’t land a 360 flip or nollie 360 flip. Oh well. That was it for skating, felt good to only skate for an hourish.

skate journal: longmont park with dave, kevin and more old guys then rocky mtn elem with fuzz too (march 24, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 24th, 2018 by corpo

On a beautiful morning I drove to Longmont park to meet Dave. He was meeting with some other older skaters that were mostly going to skate the bowl. Dave and I started in the main area though. I started off really bad actually, skateboarding wasn’t feeling right. Maybe I was rusty from taking my first day off in awhile. Ha. I was doing axle stalls then kickflip to fakie on the bank. Or axle stall then b/s flip. Then tried to do f/s flip, but kind of got distracted and annoyed by other skaters. Dave had some rad lines with switch ollies on the bank, front tails over the hip, nollie shove on the bank first try, boneless, front pivots and a cool powerslide body varial over the hip. We skated the steep to mellow hip a bit. Dave got a perfect back bigspin over it. I randomly decided to try front 270s over it. I never set one down, but some felt close. Dave was shredding the bowl. I tried nollie treflips to fakie on the mellow bank for awhile and came really close. Kevin showed up and quickly did kickflip to fakie, nollie flip to fakie and switch flip. Then him and I skated the f/s hip near the big qp. It’s really hard to skate because it’s so boosty. Kevin was trying nollie b/s flip and I was trying regular b/s flips. We went at it for awhile, both getting close at times. I kind of did one, but it was really bad. Only spun like 30 degrees, put my hand down and almost rode back in the direction I started. Ha ha.

Then we went to Rocky Mtn Elem. When we first got there I didn’t think I’d be able to skate anymore. My legs were shot. Young pup Kevin was manualling the brick medians on the bank and front tailing the ledge before I had even landed a slappy. Fuzz was on the slow start too with slappies. There are some really good curbs there for slappies. Dave got on back 50 on the ledge right away and some manuals on the bank medians. I kept it mellow for a bit and just skated the ledge. Got the slowest front 50 ever, a few accidental front 5-0s that I didn’t land, noseslide. Got a couple lines. Kickflip up the curb then crooks the ledge, front 180 up the curb then switch front noses. Fuzz, Kevin and Dave were mostly on the bank. Dave had the sick feeble stall on the edge, Kevin had front pivot on it, then I think Dave did the pivot too. Dave and Kevin were going hard at a bank. Then Dave started filming Kevin since he was trying a ridiculous line. Front 180 up the curb, switch flip on the bank, nollie back 180 off (or back bigspin later on). I also tried some lines where I ollied the first median, manualed the last brick median, then hucked kickflip back 50 and kickflip noseslide. I committed to the kickflip noseslide, but wasn’t close. I was hyped I was skating so hard, but not hyped I never got a clean ollie over a median, I kept doing a tail jib. Fuzz was in on it with a Sal flip and then kickflip to fakie. I was nervous about ollieing up the curb that fast, but joined. Ended up getting a couple no comply finger flips to fakie and a no comply shove to fakie. Kevin got the non bigspin version of the line and after a couple more slams called it good. Dave was contemplating some more skating, but had a couple bad falls on flatground and a rock. I bailed out to go on a hike with Liz. Had a good time with the dudes and forgot sunscreen so I got burnt too.

skate journal: solo random flatground near the salida pool (march 22, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 24th, 2018 by corpo

Up in BV for a couple days since my brother is in town with his boys. We went to Salida so the kids could swim. Ollie was there too. I swam and hung out with them for an hour then bailed early so I could skate some flat at a basketball court next to the pool. At first I was very winded and didn’t think it would work out too well. But I kept at it and would have a decent little flatground session. I tried a bunch of nollie flips, but wasn’t close. Tried the ironman line again, but couldn’t seem to do a heelflip to save my life. I did get a very slow backside halfcab heel though. Tried a few nollie varial heels, that trick is starting to seem possible. Had b/s flips, varial flip, sloppy treflip, halfcab flips. After awhile a dude came to play basketball so I only had half of the small court. I tried nollie tres for awhile, but then my wheel fell off and I couldn’t find the nut and my brother and the kids were ready to go. Hyped I got a little skating in.

Skate journal: flatground Wednesday at blue skies with dave (March 21, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 24th, 2018 by corpo

Skipped out for an early lunch to meet Dave at Blue Skies. I was crazing some tricks on the flat bank, but when I arrived Dave was in the rink. So we started on flat. It was pretty crisp and cool, but that would change quickly into absolutely perfect weather. It’s amazing how impossible skating feels at first. I was sore and the warm up had me thinking kickflips might be out of the question. But a few minutes in I had to beat Dave to kickflip and ended up getting 5 in a row. That was a good omen. Also a switch no comply 180. Dave struggled with shoves for awhile which is rare to see. But he would get them in all directions. The switch ones were so good. I got a bs halfcab heelflip pretty quick. That’s a rare one so I was hyped. Shortly after a nollie varial flip. I was trying the Ironman line the downhill direction. Kickflips and heelflips were feeling good. I kind of got the treflip once. Still felt cool to do the line. Dave was hucking like crazy. Fakie flips, fs halfcab flips, varial flips and I saw him stomp a heelflip and back it with a back bigspin. I added a sketchy fs halfcab heel to my list of rare tricks for the day. Hucked a lot more that I hope to someday land. It was so beautiful out it was hard to go back to work. Fun day. Today was the first time where it felt like all the flatground skating lately is paying off. So many more tricks to learn…

skate journal: louisville darkness then some weird flatground (march 20, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 21st, 2018 by corpo

Went to Louisville park after dinner no a cool night. The sun was setting and I forgot the lights don’t work there anymore. Argh. I tried to warm up quickly. There was just a couple flyout kids at the park. I was all over the place and feeling more dialed in than normal before settling on a line attempt of front 50 the tall part of the ledge then an over the top back 50 on the tiny ledge. I was hyped to get some tall front 50s, but I never got the back 50 before it got too dark. So then I headed back to Boulder, got some gas and picked the most lit space nearby which was a parking garage with weird LED lights that kinda messed with everything. I hucked a few tricks, was happy that I tried. Couldn’t get a heelflip or treflip though. Actually, didn’t really land anything. I only skated for a little bit though.

skate journal: flatground in the garage on a cold night (march 19, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 21st, 2018 by corpo

Normally I take Monday’s off of skating, but I was motivated to try some flatground. It was quite cold out so I hit the garage. I had put some thinner wheels on in an attempt to get quicker flicks. Maybe it helped, who knows. I like how it looks and feels more so that’s all that matters I guess. I mostly hucked stuff I can’t do after a brief warm up. I committed to nollie and switch flips, but whenever I commit the board only flicks halfway. Near the end I was trying to actually land something so I did fakie varial flip, nollie varial flip and to my surprise got a 360 flip in a few tries.

skate journal: northglenn early with mostly dave then some brief 50s at safeway (march 18, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on March 21st, 2018 by corpo

After a long day of skating on Saturday I was up early on Sunday. Dave called saying he was going to Northglenn and to meet him there. I debated it for a bit, but ended up going. I was still sore, but somehow motivated to catch up with Dave. He said was dragging, but when I showed he did a switch front tail on a little hump, boardslide transfer the round pipe into the bank and took a little victory lap around the park. He then worked on shove to back tail over the hip. He got a few good ones. I was kind of all over the place. I almost committed to the gap ollie right away, but ended up moving on. I had a fun run of halfcab flip on flat, boneless the long bank, kickflip to fakie on the hip bank. I hucked a few back 360 kickflips over a snowboard hip that felt very doable. Some were close, most were not. Dave ended with a halfcab boardslide transfer on the round bar to bank that was so gnarly. Then we chatted with an older guy Lyle that showed up at the park. Dave left. I hucked more back 3 flip attempts, but was not as close. Then the scooters started to take over. I hid in the back and did b/s flips over the tiny hip which was fun. Then I skated the bowl with Lyle for a bit. He was doing like 20 foot grinds. I got a 2 foot grind. Ha. It felt cool to skate it though. I was about to leave when Carleigh showed up with Ashlyn and Margaret. So I skated a bit more, but I was sore and mostly just dorked around at that point. I had a fun no comply finger flip to fakie on a mellow bank.

Then I stopped at Safeway ledge because I just wanted to do some back 50s. Not sure I ever got a totally clean one, but I had several where I either touched the wall or tic tac’s a bit during the grind. It was fun. Had some fun front 50s too. I was wearing thinner insoles and they felt better even though the ground hurt a bit more.
