skate journal: garage tres on the putter that made me happy (jan 17, 2017 day 9)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on January 18th, 2017 by corpo

Went into the garage feeling pretty lazy. Was on my regular board, but ended up hating it. I did get a bit into my normal list. Kickflips, fakie flip, halfcab flip, b/s flip. But then I grabbed my putter and things got way more fun. Got a frontside flip right away. And a quick heelflip. I’ve only landed a couple since moving up in board size so that was a treat. Then I got into a groove of nollie flip or treflip. Never got a nollie flip, but the last of three treflips felt great. I haven’t done one like that in a long time. It’s been huck and pray. Needless to say I will most likely be switching back to a smaller setup.

skate journal: flatground then saulside struggles (jan 15, 2016 day 8)

Feeling completely overwhelmed by the world and after hanging at Jason’s for several hours I skated flat in front of my house for awhile. I had put the wide trucks back on. Yeah yeah, so I’m crazy. I know it. But considering how badly I struggled with fakie flips yesterday it’s clear that 8″ trucks versus 8.5″ don’t make the difference. It went ok. I wore some new PJ 533s since they are stiffer hoping it would help my fasciitis pain. They did. I struggled with all tricks, didn’t have much drive, but kept at it. I landed a terrible nollie tre with both hands down. It still made me happy though. tried halfcab heel for awhile, didn’t get too close. Tried a bunch of 360 flips until I got a very slow one hand down land. I’ve been slacking on flatground and really want to get 3 flips back. I counted it and went to Saul’s. There was a crew of rippers there. I guess they are Satellite crew. They were all nice and ripping. Saul was ripping too. He goes faster and grinds further every time I see him. My bigger wheels and new bearings helped me skate faster, but surprisingly I bailed back 50 after back 50. It was kind of annoying. I did have fun though, got a few other things I’ve done there before.

skate journal: actually trying for awhile (jan 14, 2017 day 7)

Woke up early angry at the world. Stuff with Jason had gotten out of control. Well, not with him, but his care givers not showing up to work. I was very down and frustrated and left my house without contacting anyone. I had some boards in my trunk for 303 and some of Venture Lows in my trunk in case my obsession with a small setup got the best of me. I headed to the basketball court ledge spot in Denver. It was crisp, gray and cold. Jake called me while I was driving there on his way back from Denver and I told him to meet me there. I was there for about 10 minutes first. I was not skating well. I was trying lines from the top, down the 2 stair and then the ledge. I didn’t really do anything and I wasn’t liking my setup. Jake showed and we played a game of SKATE. As per the norm lately I didn’t really land anything. Jake won on a 3 flip that I tried for awhile and never got. The main ledge had snow under it so we skated the further section that has some rough concrete around it. It didn’t go well for me. Jake had some nice tailslides, fakie back tail, front 5-0. I could not do a front 50 to save my life (I did get a front 5-0 though ha), got some bad back 50s and a crooks or two, bad halfcab noseslide. I was reminded why I do not like 8″ high trucks over and over. I either like 8″ low or 8.5″. Anyways, then we started trying some lines from the ledge up top. It took us a long time to do anything. I never committed to the whole ledge, the crack in front of it is so weird. Jake would take the inside route trying back 50s. I just tried noseslides the last bit. It took a long time but I got a line of noseslide to fakie, fakie flip (they took me forever), switch front 180 down the 2 stair (I couldn’t get a ledge trick after). Another line of noseslide, kickflip, back 180 off the 2. Jake got a couple back 50s. He popped out over the stairs. I liked it. While trying the line I was actually trying for the first time in awhile. Trying as hard as I could. It felt good. Then I got a call regarding Jason and everything took a turn. Jake did a few heelflips while I was on the phone for about an hour. Then we left. I went to 303 then met Carleigh and Jake at Broomfield park. My legs had completely locked up and my will to skate had been broken. But there were a bunch of awesome people there. Ted and Collin, Darin, etc. It was rad. Darin eventually got me skating the quartapotty a little. He got through his checklist and had me learn a new one. Front feeble to front tail. I did it very badly, but it was fun. I had some slappy crooks on the parking block and a couple Texas plants with safety landings. I left in a lot of pain, my plantar fasciitis hurting like crazy.

Went snowboarding yesterday. It was deep tracked pow which is the hardest on your legs. So I was beat. I wanted to skate, but I felt really run down. I went in front of the house not expecting much and got just that. I got some kickflips, but that was about it as far as “real” tricks. I wish I had more, it was kind of nice out in the upper 30s.

skate journal: escaping the wind without much drive (jan 10, 2016 day 5)

Posted in New Deck, setup change, Skate Journal on January 13th, 2017 by corpo

On a very windy night I decided a setup change was in order. I’ve been having a rough go with skateboarding lately and realized it all started around the time I changed to a big setup. I had read through several of my ‘favorite’ journal entries to try and come up with my favorite size. There were almost no entries for big boards (>8.25). The truck size didn’t seem to matter so much, but I definitely seemed happier with smaller wheels (<51mm). I wanted a Reynolds part and decided to go with high trucks at least. 8.25 board, 8" high trucks and the same wheels I had. I went to the Valmont garage. My board felt high off the ground on my first few pushes which doesn't make much sense considering I've been on high trucks. I forgot how much I dislike the low hanging sprinkler pipes, but I started trying tricks. Kickflips felt easier. I still felt out of it and not very motivated. I almost left. But ended up just dorking which is all I seem to do these days. I got into a few switch front crooks on the tiny curb that doesn't grind. Also some back 50s that reminded me how much I like how sharp 8" trucks turn compared to 8.5". If I rode parallel to the ledge it wouldn't be an issue, but I take a pretty weird sharp curve right before back 50s. I was hucking flip tricks without much intention of landing them. But it did feel good to huck them as I have been totally slacking on flatground lately. Switch crook took awhile. All in all, it was mostly another dreary day of skating. I felt a little better that I actually tried some flip tricks at least. I would not be surprised if I switch to low trucks and I think I really like the feeling of how close they are to the ground. They really do help with board feel. The major con is lots of wheelbite. So for now, I will try to stick with the 8" highs and see how long that lasts. skate journal: flatground sucking n the warm (jan 8, 2016 day 4)

It was so nice out. Almost 50 degrees with almost no breeze. It felt like spring. I found a dry patch (smaller then the photo above) and went to work on tricks. I started with no pop shove tricks, then got to kickflip and started to try and go past that. Struggled with b/s flip which bummed me out. Never got heelflip which bummed me out. Tried some PJ shoes I was wearing in my car for awhile and had the same luck. Clearly it’s not the shoes. Left to try and find something more motivating and found this spot. Tried some lines there and almost focused my board. Went to the nearby two stair that was dry (but the curb up/down was wet). I struggled to front 180 down it and couldn’t ollie up it. I big part of the reason is because of the terrible cracks. I went home super bummed on how I’ve been skating.

skate journal: parking garage dorking after a lot of driving (jan 7, 2016 day 3)

Feeling energetic from not skating much and after a long drive to/from Denver selling boards I searched for dry and ended at the Valmont garage. There were a couple of younger skaters when I got there. They were having fun, it was cool. I had long johns on so felt a little stiff because of that, otherwise pretty good. One dude was doing long front tails. Made me want to learn them. I had a few slappy crooks, slow 50s, kickflips. I was skating ok. Those dudes left after awhile. I lost a little energy, so kind of just started dorking around trying slow treflips (never got one) and started hucking switch front crooks. I did the first one I tried. But it was even more terrible then the one I posted. But it was cool. I felt good about that at least.

Went into the garage after my first two day break from skateboarding since 2014. How insane is that? I had fun. Got some kickflips going, var flip, fakie flip, halfcab flip, but got stuck on heelflip. Then went inside. I felt better about my new setup at least.

After my first day off in 366 days I met up with Jack at the Engineering building on campus. Nolan, Dave and Mike would follow shortly. I was on all new stuff and it felt insanely awkward. Even new shoes. I never once felt good on my board and quickly realized that the 366 day burnout was still in effect. Luckily I was with some fun people. Jack was ripping right out of the gates doing a line with a trick up the first 3 stair then noseslide pop out up the second one. Dave filmed it. I did a couple of terrible back 50s off the ledge, that was about it. Jack went on to get all kinds of stuff. Tricks that we initially were filming for Stubborns, but is so good it’ll probably go towards Null. Nolan Had some cool no comply combos and basic ledge tricks. Dave had some good slappy noseslides. We ended up getting the boot so we moved on to the bank to curb. My setup felt good for a bit ollieing up the curb easy. Jack had to go to work. Dave, Nolan and Mike all got tricks for The Stubborns. I had a couple of fun street plant drops off the nearby ledge/rail.

Then we went up to this curb. It had started getting really cold. I did nothing on it. Mike had no comply 5-0s and the boardslide 270. Dave and Nolan did a million tricks. I somehow only got a couple of Daves. We had heard some skate noises up on the bank to fence that was nearby. Shortly after that Max and Will rolled by and joined us. It was rad. Both of them ripped it. Shortly after that Jack and Carleigh joined. Such a rad crew. I was frozen solid and not really skating. Everyone else was ripping. We moved down to a new ledge spot that Max, Will and Jack destroyed. Dave got in on it too. I was so cold it was ridiculous. All in all a weird day. I skated terribly and didn’t like my new setup, but being around a rad crew is always fun.

skate journal: DAY 366 IN A ROW marathon (dec 31, 2016 day 366)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 4th, 2017 by corpo

Started the day off with a bit of flatground in front of the house. And by that I mean just a few ollies and basic tricks. The treflip was filmed a couple days ago.

Then I went to Southern Hills. It was anti-climatic and solo, but whatevs. I was kind of sucking, but forced myself to do some flatground and that cheered me up a bit. I got a heelflip which felt good. It’s been way too long for that trick. And a few crooks which are always way fun.

Then I met Dave, Nolan and eventually Riley, Carleigh and Garrett on campus. We started at the meet up curb where I did a million slappy crooks and a ‘slappy’ front tail shove. Nolan goofed around with quite a few tricks. I think he said he did his first ever fakie back nosegrind. But since he’s young he called it a switch 5-0. Sorry Dave, but I forget what trick you tried a bunch. I did see him get close to some switch tres of flat. That is going to rule.

We moved into campus about 50 feet. Riley had joined us and was trying a weird ollie to narrow ride to gap 50. He never quite got it. We ended up stacking some clips for a bit. I got a dork line of 4 wheel drive a parking block, kickflip up a curb then front 180 down the 3 stair. Nolan did something like drop to bluntslide the parking block, airwalk on flat, then kickflip the 3. Dave no complied the parking block to sidewalk gap. Riley had a line with a boardslide down the 3 stair rail and also a front 180 to fakie manual off the 3 that was nuts.

Then we went to the rock spot. A few basics were done on it. I did front tail to fakie, Dave ollied it, Riley did back tail. Garrett and Carleigh joined us. Then I noticed you could gap to grind on the plastic landscape trim and a super fun session ensued. I mean it took me about 50 tries longer then anyone else to “land” a 50, but I did eventually do it. The tricks Nolan and Riley were doing were crazy. Riley was popping his tricks like two feet high just to stick half the time and flip into the grass. It was hilarious. Nolan did a 50 body varial 50 early on that elevated the session and made so much more seem possible. Riley landed a switch flip to grind, switch heel to 50 first try, so much more. Carleigh had several good 50s and then tried kickflip 50 for awhile and got one. So sick. I kind of got a couple early grab grinds, but better yet were the hang ups when I didn’t make the huge one foot gap. Garrett somehow kept his white shirt clean. The no comply 180 to fakie 50 was rad. This was the end of the day. Then we went and had a fun night out in Boulder. 366 days done! I’m looking forward to giving my mind and body some days off of skating.
