This “throwaway” part is incredible. Dude can do anything. Easily gets my vote for SOTY. Add in some Belle & Sebastian and wow what a great edit.

skate journal: garage fun until treflip time (nov 29, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 30th, 2019 by corpo

After driving down from the mountains I watched the Fellas DVD then went out into the garage feeling pretty good. I had changed to the Currex insoles, but other then that no changes. I started with the straight 8. Kickflips felt alright, fakie flips were okay. I committed to most switch and nollie flips. They felt closer than they looked. But I think once I get a little better flick they might be possible. Heelflip and fakie heel were landed, but not great. Switch heel felt doable, but nollie heel not even close. Backside flip was alright, switch didn’t feel realistic this time. Got kinda close to varial heel, nollie varial heel not close at all. Then came treflip and it took like 10 minutes. Argh. That doesn’t sound so bad, but it felt bad. I was committing to a lot of them at least. I hucked nollie tres after that which I dont’ think I’ve ever landed in the garage. I was tired from the treflips though and didn’t really put the effort in. Ended trying halfcab heel which was kinda close then nollie front heel which wasn’t close at all.

(pain level 2/10 felt good)

skate journal: morning garage session that went a little better (nov 27, 2019)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on November 30th, 2019 by corpo

Feeling better than I thought I would I had some time to kill before leaving for the mountains so I went out to the garage and skated. The 8.3 setup felt better, I had put smaller wheels on it too which I liked. Flip tricks were still hard, but came easier. Got kickflip, fakie flip, bad heelflip, backside flip. Hucked switch backside flip and it felt close. Nollie flips felt really close too. Ended with a few treflips with heel drag. It’s hard to get those all the way around in the garage.

skate journal: garage not landing anything (nov 26, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 30th, 2019 by corpo

Went out to the garage after working from home and literally did not land anything. I guess a few kickflips, but it took awhile to get them. It was so incredibly depressing. I couldn’t fakie flip. I tried nollie flips and felt like I’m still making some progress towards landing one, so there was at least that. But overall I just hated the 8.5 and realized that size doesn’t work for me. Somehow 8.75 was before the wheelbase change, but I think that might be a fib too so I went inside and redid my 8.3 complete.

(setup 8.5″ null curby deck, venture 5.8 titanium hanger with cast baseplate, 3 washers inside each axle, 53mm sml og wide wheels, bones medium bushings, new balance numeric foy 306 black/gum size 12, footprint gamechanger insoles)

skate journal: dog park urgency before the snow (nov 25, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 25th, 2019 by corpo

Had the day off work. It was cold and you could feel the storm approaching. I met Dave L there after dropping the duty phone at work. Eric would join and randomly so would Aki. I had done like an hour worth of exercises the night before in hopes of being less sore. It worked for a good hour or so. Dave was already 50’ing the benches easily. There was a dude there with really great style working on fast/tall kickflips/treflips. It was rad. Warming up went alright for me. I continued with back 50s on the low step that felt good, got a front 50 shove on the bench, struggled with all flip tricks. Eric started on his cruiser did some wallie 180s, 50s and whatnot before getting out the Ishod and taking it serious. Ha. He has such a mean heelflip. Aki said he hasn’t been skating much lately, but he was still ripping. He quickly got to back and front 50s on the benches, lotsa kickflips. I was all over the place, but started focusing on the noseslide 270 shove on the black ledge. I landed on it once and had a pretty good slam. After that I was pretty sore and didn’t skate much. I then went and visited Dave F in the hospital. Sketchy situation, but he’ll be fine.

skate journal: dog park sunday blah and soreness (nov 24, 2019)

Posted in New Deck, Skate Journal on November 25th, 2019 by corpo

Feeling pretty sore, but not knowing what else to do I went skating. Ha okay it’s not that bad, I wanted to skate once the wind died down. I went to meet Garrett at the dog park. I was there first, only a couple people were there. I was less into it than I thought I would be. I had a new deck. 8.5 Curby. I was excited to scratch it up so I got to boardslides and noseslides quickly. But overall I didn’t really do much I was excited about. Just continued to maybe improve a little on back 50s on the low step and I managed to finally halfcab noseslide the tall side of the black ledge. That was the highlight, then I pretty much just stopped and watched Garrett. Garrett is smooth, skates fast, looks good on board. He nose manualled the black box like it was nothing. Oh yeah, we played a game of SKATE where I basically landed nothing. I filmed garrett get a couple tricks on the barrier then we split and filmed at Wilville. It was one of the harder lines I’ve filmed in awhile having to run down stairs while hopefully not shaking the camera much. He got a really rad line.

skate journal: new wilville area with dave l and will (nov 23, 2019)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on November 25th, 2019 by corpo

After being called for work and the snow mostly melting Dave L and Will showed up at my house. I had scoped some new spots on a walk to the new Wilville area in the morning. We skated down the bike path to get there which was a fun cruise. We ended up at the rock spot which made for some fun wallrides I thought. Will thought it was really cool and got his camera out right away. I wasn’t really ready to film, but we went to it quickly and I was soon trying a line. Drop in on a kinda sketchy rock, rock ride another rock, varial flip down a two stair. I was feeling pretty good and when I got the varial flip I was extra excited. We moved on to another area that had a round curb high manny pad, 3 stair, flagstone ledges. Dave L was going for a manual around the pad. He got remotely close, but it was hard to do without a heel drag. I was playing on the 3 stair/ledge area. I tried a line of pop shove, front 180 down the 3, switch 180 on flat, noseslide. I think i got that. Will and Dave joined in that area. Will had some steezy noseslides then did a really sick halfcab noseslide. Then he filmed Dave L for awhile get a super good line. Back 180, switch front 3, switch boardslide. I was playing with back 180s down the 3, but couldn’t do it. After Dave did his line he filmed me go for a pretty basic line. Front 180 the 3, halfcab flip on flat, noseslide the ledge (it was pretty tall and it wouldn’t crook), wallie nollie a pillar after. It felt really neat to link those tricks and I liked how it covered the spot. Then I filmed Dave get his line a couple more times and Will line out the halfcab noseslide with a switch flip and nollie heel. Dang tech! The we walked home. I was so sore, but man it was a fun afternoon of skating!

(setup 8.5″ null nolan deck, venture 5.8 titanium hanger with cast baseplate, 3 washers inside each axle, 53mm sml og wide wheels, bones medium bushings, new balance numeric foy 306 black/gum size 12, footprint gamechanger insoles)
(pain level 5/10 might be time for cupsoles again)

skate journal: short garage session (nov 22, 2019)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on November 23rd, 2019 by corpo

While finishing up my day of work from home I went out to the garage on a cold evening. I had switched to my 8.5″ setup since the latest 8.75s that arrived now have the same wheelbase. Argh. I also wore some old PJ shoes. I figure I should switch things up with shoes sometimes and the garage doesn’t really matter much. I did a few shoves, nollies, 180s etc to get warmed up. Then did kickflip and fakie flip. Tried switch flip and nollie flip. I didn’t get too close, but I did commit to most tries. They just don’t flip enough. I got heelflip, then tried for fakie heel and got stuck on it for awhile. After that treflip on the 10th try, then a couple more tricks before dinner.

skate journal: am dog park before the snow (nov 20, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 20th, 2019 by corpo

Out before work again on a cloudy day with snow supposedly coming later in the day. There was someone there when I arrived and for whatever reason it made the warm up go quicker. I got through the boardslides right away, but quickly noticed my legs were toast. The other dude left and I kind of posted up on the concrete bench to do a few tricks. I didn’t get too far before wanting to move on. I really wanted the front nosegrind. It took awhile to get into it and I got closer, but never got it. Argh. I had done a couple back 50s that were slow, but I finally was going fast enough to grind a little at least. My legs weren’t really feeling flip tricks. I did get a first try halfcab flip, but that was about it besides kickflip & fakie flip. Eric showed up looking like Miles Silvas on a cruiser board and quickly started ripping. My battery died so I stopped trying those tricks and cruised a bit, but quickly realized I was totally beat. I did get a halfcab noseslide to fakie. Eric had done front tails, 50’d the tall part of the black ledge, heelflips and ended on a wallie front 180 that was sick. Good seeing him.

skate journal: another solo am dog park session (nov 19, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 19th, 2019 by corpo

On a cooler morning I went to the dog park and had about an hour before I needed to get to work. I started off good, getting through the boardslides right away and 50 and manual the tiny pad. Even a couple slow back 50s on the lower step. Had a bunch of front 50 on the low narrow metal ledge that were fun. It sounds dumb, but getting used to the feeling of coming off the end of a ledge is still scary to me. I had tried a couple noseslide 270 shoves on the big side of the step ledge and got really close. I went to ollie the tiny kinked rail and slammed super hard. I thought I would be done, but I walked it off. I would get revenge on it. I had halfcab noseslides, crooks were working, a couple slow front 50s on the benches. I went back to try more noseslide 270 shoves, but didn’t get as close. I also tried to front smith the tall side of the step ledge. Seems less scary than 50s, but I never committed. Tried to ollie the wallie ledge a bunch. I slammed a lot. I tried to work on my ollies. Pushing the front foot forward/down more to actually get the back wheels up. It seemed to work, but it’s hard to relearn how to ollie after 30 years. I think I absolutely need the bigger setup to ollie correctly. I ended trying a line of 360 flip, fakie nosegrind, switch crook the concrete benches. I never got the 3 flip. Got on fakie nosegrind, one tiny switch crook jib to forward. I ended trying no comply flip body varials on the parking block. I wanted to challenge Dave with it. I got close, but never got both feet on. Then it was off to work. Not the best morning, but still managed to try new stuff /push myself so that makes me happy.
