skate journal: berthoud park battles with dave on a beautiful day (oct 20, 2017)

Had the day off work and went to Berthoud park on an absolutely gorgeous day. And I mean like as perfect of a day as they come. Sunny, warm, tiny breeze. It was amazing. I got to the park first. Initially I wasn’t too hyped on the park, but it changed quickly. I had an idea of doing all 8 180s over the hip as a warm up. It didn’t really go like that though, I started with lines that involved other stuff. Ride off a curb, wallie a parking block, boardslide. I had gotten a few of the easy 180s when Dave showed up and I told him the drill. Ha. We both went after the 180s, but definitely skated other stuff too. I spent awhile on a line of front board a flat bar (the first few seemed okay, then they got worse and worse and shorter and shorter), ollie to fakie on the bank then f/s halfcab over the hip. I got a terrible one. I might have lined that out with a nollie back 180 over the hip that felt really good though. Another line was kickflip over the b/s hip, crooks the ledge, ollie to fakie on the bank then switch back 180 over the hip. I never really got it, but I think I met the minimum requirement of a ‘switch back turn’. Dave had switch back 180s pretty consistently though and was trying lines that started with the two regular 180s and worked his way up. The nollies to fakie on the qp were rad. Then became battle time. Dave’s battle was front lip on the little round bar. His hype line to it was amazing. Front 180 a parking block then fakie tail stall with a shove out. See that’s why I love skating with Dave. We’re at a skatepark with all these features and he’s trying a line over and over that has a fakie tail stall shove out in it. So awesome. He would get it of course and it was sick. My battle was front 50 the ledge then b/s flip over the hip. I’ve been struggling with front 50s for quite some time now so this was way more of a battle then it needed to be. I do feel like doing so many front 50 attempts helped me with some confidence, but we’ll see. Anyway, around an hour later I would eventually line up the 50 with the b/s flip and it felt oh so good. Dave had gotten another line by then which was pretty amazing. Nose manual the main ledge, pivot the qp, front axle the bank to ledge. Unreal. I posed a few 360 flips over the hip, never committed. Came close to halfcab crook the tiny ledge, remotely close to b/s axle on the bank to ledge. I hit a point where I was so tired and sore. I tried some cabs over the hip, but never got one. The energizer bunny known as Dave kept going and going though. He was still trying lines with hippy jumps over the A rail when I said I needed to get going. Fun session, things didn’t come easy, but they did come so that’s cool at least.

@siouxer666 and @garrettswheelers playing at Lafayette. Guest trick by @lastfallensoul

I guess I was coming down with something as I got to Lafayette park after work and decided to start with a nap in the car. Turns out I crashed for a solid 30 minutes. Riley, Sean, Brian and Donnie were there when I arrived. Garrett would show up shortly after. I felt quite sore. Warming up was not easy, especially around people that totally rip. I hit the tiny parking block quarterpipe for awhile with Brian, Donnie, Sean. They were all doing good tricks. Donnie tried powerslide to fakie 5-0 and slammed so hard. It was hilarious. Brian was doing long bluntslides and almost popping in backside. Sean with boardslides 270. Oh yeah, I had a couple really embarrassing slams (yes, the guy who intentionally likes to run into trash cans can get embarrassed) right away. One on a kickturn, the other while trying to early grab over a cone. It put me in a bad mood. On the manny pad Riley was doing really hard stuff. Sean did a sick kickflip nose manual before I could manual it. After awhile we skated the rock ride/hip. Wallies over it or so fun, had a couple kickflips on the bank after. Brian, Garrett, Donnie, Sean did a bunch of tricks on the rock. Garrett beat Donnie in a game of SKATE on it. Meanwhile I was filming Riley try that spin around manual forever. Like forever ever. Ha. He would eventually get it and by then I was ice cold and stiff, but still tried to skate with them. It didn’t work. The rock bank looks fun to do tricks on, but I wasn’t warmed up enough to even do a kickflip on it. Garrett rattled off tricks left and right. Sean has such good style. Donnie is a beast and I wish I had some of his always commit mentality. Riley did so much so easily. Fun seeing those dudes.
