skate journal: short and sweet random lville tech spot session with jack, carliegh, fuzz and rob (nov 4, 2017)

Posted in New Shoes, Skate Journal on November 6th, 2017 by corpo

After some morning mountain biking with Ollie I jumped in with NASCARleigh and Jack and we went to the Lville industrial area without a certain spot in mind. We ended up at this spot. At first there was not much energy and we all seemed king of bummed. It started to get better though and Positive Fuzz showed up and it was on. Carleigh was bumming on a backside 50 on a tall curb, but man, that’s why she rules. She kept trying and she got it. I get hyped when people aren’t too afraid to struggle with a basics. Probably because I feel like I struggle with the basics all of the time too. She also has some front tailslides on the waxed part of the bank, 2nd try kickflip and more of them. Jack did bluntslides, some to 5-0, manuals to pivot fakie or to nosepick, ollieing onto narrow ledges, ollieing up the loading dock easy, and encouraging me to slam. Ha, I basically got into a rut of trying front shoves off the shorter loading dock, but to get hyped for it I had to kickflip off the bump first. It was super fun. I was trying hard, it felt great and I was landing on a bunch of front shoves going slow. I broke my tail around the time Rob showed, but it was still mostly skateable backwards until it totally snapped on a kickflip making for a really funny clip. Fuzz was motivated to try a new trick he saw in Hockey III. Backside axle stall to front 5-0. He did a few super good. Rob was taking it easy because of a gnarly shinner that’s still healing up. It was rad seeing him cruise around on his christmas complete though.

skate journal: friday off work! kings mill and winona ditch with dave and jake (nov 3, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 5th, 2017 by corpo

Jake and I skated in the street for a bit as we waited for Dave. I was 0-5 on kickflips and Jake had already landed treflip. Ugh.

Then we went to Kings Mill park. That park is rad. We thought the kids had the day off and we would have the park to ourselves. We did for quite awhile. Everyone was trying lines and I will never remember it all. Dave and I started slow. Jake was shredding out of the gates. He’s young, we’re not. Ha. Anyway, I remember Jake doing back 50 on the ledge, fakie 50 on it, front tail, crooks. He would normally hit a qp and or the bank in the line. He had some grind transfers on the hip, but didn’t do his normal blunt or nosesblunt tricks. I tried a few ollies to fakie on a qp then turn around and bail back 50s on the ledge over and over. Argh. Some of the ollies to fakie felt fun even though I know none of them were anywhere near the coping. I tried a line of front 50 the ledge then 360 flip off the little bump (by the scooter kids). I landed on a bunch of them and eventually got a 360 flip. It felt rad even though I tic tac’d like crazy. I tried to back it up with a front rock on the qp then ollie onto the taller part of the ledge which I had done earlier. Didn’t get the ollie up though. After that I couldn’t even commit to crooking the ledge. All the scooter kids that had shown really wore on me. Dave had a bad slam tring a 180 nosepick over the A frame, but other then that he ripped. Boardslide transfer the A frame, back tail the bank (inches away from scooter kids heads), 5-0 the ledge, front lip the hip qp, front tail the reg qp. When we were ready to go he kept skating and skating. He didn’t get the front nosegrind though. Doh.

The scooter kids got really bad so we left for Winona ditch. The river was running heavy which made it even scarier than normal. We started in the grindable bank area. Jake got back 5-0, but couldn’t quite get back 5-0 to fakie. I just did some little backside slashes. Dave slid some bluntslides, but never pulled in. We took turns watching for boards shooting out, because that river is gnar.

Then Dave and I dropped into the hip section. It’s so scary. I had to work my way up one foot and a time. Dave did the whole dropin I think. Neither of us put any tricks down though, we were too scared. There was water in the landing which made it worse too. So the photo of Dave’s boneless is prime for poser of the month. Fun day with these dudes.

skate journal: saulside then flatground failing (nov 2, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 5th, 2017 by corpo

Went to Saul’s/Saulside/Chicken Coup/Chicken Bowl after work. It was just a quick one. Got a first wall carve grind, had some runs with more coping touches then normal. Posed a little. Saul came close to layback backside grinds, back disaster, keeps getting faster.

Then I went into campus. I rolled around briefly looking for something, found nothing and then went to the basketball court to skate flat. It’s hard to describe how beautiful the view of the flatirons was. My phone surely didn’t capture it. Flatground went terrible. Almost board focus terrible. I was trying lines and never got past halfcab flip. In an hour of skating the only flip trick I landed was kickflip. The two redeeming things that happened were ollieing that cone a couple times which felt really great and then a switch crook on the curb. Oh yeah, I was skating the 598 cupsoles since I thought it would help with flat. It didn’t. After awhile some younger skaters showed up that I’ve seen there the one other time I’ve skated there. They could barely land kickflips, now they were doing varial flips, heelflips and more. That was a little depressing for me. I probably looked so depressed while I bailed trick after trick. Tough night.

skate journal: short and stubborn session at the school (oct 31, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on November 1st, 2017 by corpo

Went over to the school on a chilly night and start playing on the curb. Just did various nose/tail stalls and 270s out at first. Then pivots, then nosepicks. After awhile I got bored and headed up towards the school. I passed my son and his friends biking which was funny. I hit the ledge right by the entrance for a couple nose jibs. The switch front nose was the most fun. Then I went behind the school and took several tries to ollie onto this little rock. Then I tried a line of front 180, halfcab flip, ollie onto the rock. The halfcab flip took forever. Literally like 40 tries. I got the rock ollie that try luckily. Then I went home. That rock is small, I look forward to skating it more and hopefully becoming more able to easily hop onto it.

skate journal: switch heel attempts in the garage (oct 30, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on October 31st, 2017 by corpo

My knee felt even better so I hit the garage on a cold night to pose some switch heels. I started on the putter and didn’t really get very close. There was a couple that felt like I was positioned correctly, but it didn’t flip. So I hucked on my regular 8.5″ and they flipped better and I got closer. I tried a few cabs too, but it’s scary in such a tiny space with death traps if I spin out and fall.

skate journal: Denver TF and then a new ditch spot (oct 29, 2017)

Woke up and my knee was feeling good so I knew I would try to skate. I brought boards to 303 and Emage then met Dave at this schoolyard in Denver which is kind of known as the TF. Dave was doing crazy boardslides when I got there dropping down a parking block. Shortly after he wanted to do it with a bench in front as well. As he worked up to that I tried to skate. It felt good. I was pretty timid at first for sure and didn’t do much, mostly just wallrides on the sheet of wood against the wall and some parking block slappy crooks or boardslides. Then I filmed Dave for awhile and some Emage heads showed up. Tino, Brendan and Owen. It was rad seeing them. They mostly skated flat and wow Tino was popping some good ones. Dave got his trick, a car moved away from the bench and everyone skated lines. Brendan was doing lines with front 50, nollie flips and front tail to fakie. So good. Tino got some nosegrinds, fakie ollie over the bench. Owen had back tail over the bench. I got a weak sauce line of switch nosejib, no comply finger flip, slappy crooks. Felt cool. Then I filmed Dave do this crazy front 5-0 for awhile. The Emage dudes left and Dave’s friend “Deep Rock” Dave showed up. Dave got the 5-0 and it was so sick. After that I tried to get a line to get myself going. Bean plant off the narrow ledge, bankride hand touch, boardslide the parking blocks, noseslide the bench. Pretty fun. After that we all skated the wood for awhile. DR Dave was doing wallrides and had some rad frontside ollies. We moved the trash can into the middle of the wood and did some fun carves over it while putting your hand on the trash can. It felt really cool. Then DR Dave started doing frontside ollies, I was trying bonelesses with my hand on the trash can and Dave was doing wallrides with his hand on the trash can. Dave got a couple easy ones of his. DR Dave and I struggled, but ended up getting some. That was one of the most fun tricks I’ve done in awhile. It felt so cool to put weight on the hand and kind of float a little. I got a few of them, but it took awhile to get all 4 down. What a fun trick.

Then we went to this little ditch. I got there first and kind of posed noseslide attempts, but never came close. DR Dave and Dave showed up. We ollied some hips, carved around and things were flowing. Both Daves tried some crazy roll ins. Dave’s was extra crazy and I thought he was gonna get wrecked Luckily he gave up and instead started doing this crazy halfcab grass ride carve into a wallie/nollie that would sometimes get some grind. DR Dave had some rad hip ollies, tailblocks in the grass and bank ollies. I had a fun little line of kickflip on the bank then front 180 over the hip. Then I took way too long to do a no comply finger flip over the frontside hip and even way longer to do a backside flip over it. But man it felt good. I followed that with a kickflip over the frontside hip in a few tries. I may have struggled to get the first couple tricks, but man they felt great when I got them. The metal grate really messed with the angle and flow of things along with not much of a runway. Man it felt good to skate, I had almost no knee pain. I was wearing some old cupsoles that didn’t skate great, but maybe helped my knee.

Can’t skate because of knee pain so here’s an out of focus #mattmillerchallenge #stilltrickchallenge

I had gone to a Dr for my knee pain a couple days ago. They couldn’t find anything actually wrong, but said to take a week off work. My knee was feeling better, but still not great. But the weather was great and I was going crazy so I decided to do the whole stationary trick. I did a first try no comply flip and figured it would be easy standing still. Nope, not moving on a no comply is super hard. It took 11 minutes for me to land this. I felt so silly walking back and forth between each attempt. Oh well, got a #mattmillerchallenge!

Still feeling motivated I met Dave at the dog park for a short one. I quickly realized I should not be skating. My knee was done, I couldn’t ollie or kickflip (although I still beat Dave to a kickflip! ha ha). So I just skated switch a little and somehow trying switch heels didn’t hurt so I just did that for 30 minutes. It was pretty cool actually and a few were the closest I’ve ever gotten. Dave had some nice bigspins, cabs, shoves and tried heelflip for awhile. He couldn’t quite get one. Then we filmed each other doing stand still tricks for all the rage. Well, Dave actually did a trick. I just walked up and flipped the board with my toe. Maybe I’ll post it, but I hate how I walk in it. Ha ha.

skate journal: solo louisville struggles because of my knee (oct 22, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on October 27th, 2017 by corpo

Went to Louisville park feeling very motivated even though my left knee had started hurting more. My chiropractor said it didn’t look like anything serious so I went skating. Initially I thought I would not be able to skate at all, any attempt to ollie was met with knee pain and resistance. I should have left, but I’m stubborn. Took a couple runs in the snake run, tried some no ollie tricks on the little ledge, then eventually kind of skated normal. There was a crew of teenagers when I first got there mostly just lurking which was annoying. At least a couple actually skated. I tried a couple lines. Switch noseslide 270 the little ledge, fakie flip on flat, halfcab noseslide the main ledge. Never got a halfcab noseslide even though I got into so many of them. It was weird. Going the other way I tried front 50 shove the main ledge for awhile then gave up to just switch noseslide (going back to fakie was fun and I was getting better at them), switch front 180 on flat then back 50 the tiny ledge going over the corner. It took me forever. I did a few other tricks in between. Nothing special, some ollies over the hip, bean plant on the flat bank, crooks the ledge. But once I finally got the line I left. Oh and of course I accidentally did a 5-0 instead of 50. Oh well.

skate journal: fun crew at valmont area (oct 21, 2017)

I’m writing this way after it happened so bear with me. A crew of us assembled at Valmont area. I was first and started on the bank. Jack and Carleigh were next, Fuzz, Dave, Ed, Damian, Jake followed shortly. We were kind of all over the place initially. It was cool seeing everyone skate it some silly street spot differently. Lines there are fun. It’s impossible to remember what everyone was trying. I saw Fuzz and Dave trying manuals. Carleigh no complying the tall curb. Ed with the curb stalls. I don’t know. After awhile I saw Dave doing a beanplant off the little drop and joined him. Then Jack, Fuzz, Dave and I were trying lines in around there. Ollies up the little gap unless you were Jack and then it was heelflips and bigspins trying to end in wallride. I had a fun line of ollie the little gap, bean plant the drop then varial flip to fakie on the bank (although I think I bailed out in the run out). After awhile everyone skated the bank. Jack had a gnarly frontside wallride and a crazy front nose jib (stubborns/null alert). Carleigh with the boardslide down, then adding a kickflip then adding a no comply before it too. Putting the ‘gnar’ in Gnarly Carleigh. Jake got 360 flip to fakie. Dave went over to the manual pads. Ed tail bock and steezy slides. Damian kickflip to fakie. Fuzz did a crazy powerslide to kickflip (stubborns alert). My knee had started hurting in a weird way. It sucked. I kept skating though. Well, I attempted to. I couldn’t get 360 flips to fakie, fakie 360 flips, fakie flip or varial flip. Luckily I was 2-2 on halfcab flips. Rad crew. I had to leave first to go see Bob Dylan.
