skate journal: short curbs with ollie then a little research ledge on thunders (april 7, 2018)

@ollie.gillingham first front 50. ❤️

A post shared by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

Woke up to cold temps and snow and lost motivation to skate. In the middle of the day I started watching the Nuggets game and decided to throw together a complete with the Thunder 148s I skated twice. During halftime Ollie and I went across the street and hit the curbs for a bit. My setup felt great. The muscle memory from years of 8″ setups with Thunder’s kicked in and I was doing back 50s like I haven’t in years. Had some fun intentional front 5-0s, manuals, 180s then saw Ollie try to copy a front 50 of mine. A few tries later he did one. So rad. That was the trick that sold me on skateboarding some 30 years ago. So then I had to film one and it took a few more tries, but he got it. I had some fun slappy crooks too, then we went in.

The rest of the basketball game was me changing my setup so that my better deck had the Thunders and I went to the research ledge after. I’m not sure why I was so tired. Oh yeah, while riding my stationary bike as a warm up I was wearing the Lakais and they hurt so bad. The pointed show was killing my toes, so I busted out some NB# 212s I had on deck. Man that shoe has a wide toebox and I love them. So I had new trucks basically and new shoes. It showed initially with some bad noseslide attempts, but I got some. Then I kept missing on crooks because the trucks are set back a little. But once I got used to it crooks felt great. I got several sketchy back 50s, a front 50. Tried a line of 180 up the curb, fakie flip, halfcab noseslide which I didn’t quite get. Flip tricks were kinda weird, but mostly because I had no juice. I also noticed that my deck was warped. Huh. I went home within an hour. Was hyped on the trucks though. I might put in a harder bushing or something, but I think I’ll stick with them for awhile (unlike the two days I gave them before). I mean it makes sense I would like them since they are lower trucks.

(setup 8.25 null atomic cowboy deck, thunder 148s with old forged baseplate, venom 88a bushings, 50mm bones stf v1, new balance numeric 212 b/w size 11, spenco 3/4 thinsole orthotic and footprints 5mm insole)

skate journal: flatground in front the house then the school again on a big setup (april 4, 2018)

Posted in Favorite, setup change, Skate Journal on April 5th, 2018 by corpo

Yeah so here I am in one of those setup OCD cycles. One thing I’ve come to learn is proportions are very important. The board should be as wide or wider than the trucks. Skating the 8.25 in Seattle with 8.5″ trucks doesn’t work well, it does’t flip as fast and it just feels weird. So after work I grabbed a barely used 8.5 from a previous setup spat and put the 8.5″ Ventures on it. After dinner I went out front of the house thinking if flatground goes terrible then I’m over it and I’ll go back to the 8.25 with small trucks. Only it didn’t go bad, it actually went very good. My halfcab flips felt better than they have in awhile, I did like 8/10 heelflips, one in a line with a bad treflip. But the fact that I landed a treflip at all made me happy. I had hucked a bunch of flippers. All of them felt fine. Then I wen across the street to the curb area and had a grand ol’ time. I landed a switch front 50! It felt cool. Which led to me doing a fakie front 50 without turning out. It felt cool. And I almost got one with a switch 180 out. Couldn’t do front tails, but most everything else was going well. Kickflip up the curb, fakie ollies up, kickflip off, b/s shove off, back 50 front 180, front 50 back 180, intentional front 5-0s. Even got a sketchy bs flip up the curb. After awhile I was sitting and posting the vert clip on the gram and Ollie came out of nowhere and scared me so good. Ha. Then he skated for about 20 minutes. He had a few clean ollies up the curb, a back 180 up the curb! Manuals into 5-0s, kind of a front hurricane trying to back 180 up, then he actually tried a hurricane and got one. He also did his first ever nollie shove. Fun night.

(setup 8.5″ null rabethica deck, venture black icon 5.8″ trucks, venom 88a bushings, old 52mm bones stf v5 wheels, 3 washers outside each axle, lakai ellis black/white size 11.5, spenco 3/4 orthotic thinsole and thin adidas insole)

skate journal: short mess around across the street (april 3, 2018)

After a couple recovery days from #cloggingyourfeedwithstokepartdeux I went over to the school. I had put my smaller trucks back on. I thought it would be this glorious return to a setup I loved. It wasn’t. I had really enjoyed the wide trucks in Seattle, but hey dont’ work with 8.25 so well. But it took me awhile to realize that. Low trucks make me kind of clumsy. You have to land everything so perfectly (which is normally easy for me, but I was tired ha ha). I don’t think I even got a clean back 50. I hucked a lot. Got a switch crook jib or two. Didn’t get flip tricks, but man them kickflips rotated fast. I had new shoes. Some Lakais. They felt good, a little narrow in the foot, but good. Had a couple front tailslides, couldn’t do fakie 50.

(setup 8.25 null atomic cowboy deck, venture awake 5.2 lows, bones medium bushings, 51mm bones stf v1 wheels, old swiss bearings, lakai ellis black/white size 11.5, custom orthotic insole)

skate journal: short curb session with dave then #cloggingyourfeedwithstokepartdeux starts at jefferson! (march 27, 2018)

Brief curb session with @fullertrron while the ❄️ melts.

A post shared by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

So I went with 8.25 and the wide trucks, got new wheels and it felt great. I had the day off work with some time before my flight to Seattle. Dave stopped by for a lunch skate and we went to the curb across the street. I felt good right out of the gate. It was kind of surprising. We were both trying a lot of lines. Up curbs, down curbs, grinds, slides, flippers. It was cool. Dave had kickflip, manual front 180 out, 50s, back 50 nollie shove out, no ollie tailslides and some good back 5-0s when I wasn’t taking a photo. I tried front 180 a puddle, fakie flip on flat, fakie 50 a curb, but never got the fakie 50. Had 50s, intentional front 5-0s, hucked a bunch of tricks I haven’t done in awhile like kickflip front 50, switch crook, front nosegrind. I got a line of switch front 180 a puddle, kickflip back 50 then almost back 50 (ha ha, got the flip in, but not the easier version) and ended by landing a new trick in the slowest way possible. Front 5-0 no comply shove out.

Then after a bus ride and a flight #cloggingyourfeedwithstokepartdeux was on!   We went right to Jefferson skatepark.  Half of it was lit well, the other half was not.  There was also several youth hanging out tagging the park or vibing.  It was pretty cold, but it’s a different cold then CO.  It’s in the 50s, but humidity makes it cold.  Once you get warmed up it’s good.  We did our thing warming up.  Joe had done a few ledge tricks as had Josh.  Josh tried a couple fakie 50s and then Joe comes and shows him up with a first try fakie 50 shove out.  Take that Josh!  I took a few tries to get a back 50 on the qp over the ledge which was very fun. Even though the lower area wasn’t lit very well Josh was ollieing the kicker, doing lipslide transfers over the qp hip, beanplants, a lot more. I had a fun line of front 50 the lurb then noseslide the ledge into the bank. Joe did the fakie 50 into the bank so good. Josh took a break for a bit, I battled the front 50 over the qp which was scary at first and took quite a few tries. Thanks for filming it Josh! Then Josh and I did the doubles routine and Joe and I finished the night off with a frontside ledge into the bank session. And by that I mean Joe rattling off tricks like front 50 180, front lip to 50 while I took too long to do front 50. But the front 50 felt awesome. Fun first night.

(setup 8.25 null atomic cowboy deck, black venture 5.8 v-light, 3 washers outside each axle, 88a venom bushings, 51mm bones stf v1 wheels, old swiss bearings, new balance numeric 255 baby blue size 12, spenco 3/4 thinsole with 5mm footprints insole)

skate journal: solo campus ledges (dec 5, 2017)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on December 6th, 2017 by corpo

On a pretty cool night I was feeling lazy then remembered the little yellow ledge on campus and it got me out of the house. I parked at the meet up lot, did a few slappy crooks then pushed to the yellow ledge (okay, basically curb height but it’s square with angle iron). I had switched to low trucks. Normally when I first switch to lows there is a bit of a hesitancy wondering if I should really be doing it. This time it was solid gold and they felt great. I got front and back 50s second try. The back 50 was cool because it normally takes me awhile to work up the courage to go over the top like that. I didn’t really land much after that though. Got a couple switch crook pivots, one where I almost grinded some. I mostly hucked front nosegrinds which I kind of landed once with a little wheel bonk on the way out. Hucked halfcab crooks, switch front crooks too. But things took a change for the better when I thought of back nosegrind, remembered the angle I used to take at the Vans park and out of nowhere committed to a few. It felt so cool. I think the lows give me a bit more confidence being closer to the board. Anyways, I never landed the back nosegrind, but I did grind a few of them. I wasn’t really expecting to land them yet since you have to pop out there and I’m no Wenning. I did a couple flippers, but not many. Got a first try b/s flip, all kickflips felt good and landed on a treflip or two.

Then I went to the tall ledge. I was pretty tired at this point, but managed a couple noseslides quickly to get me hyped. Got a hands down 360 flip, halfcab flip that felt good. I was really surprised to get a first try ollie onto the ledge (it was super sketchy though). Especially surprised because I couldn’t do it on an 8.5 setup recently, but now with smaller stuff it seemed easier. Hmm. I had a fun run of switch ollie a little crack gap then an absolutely terrible and fun halfcab noseslide. I’m pretty sure the board was basically upright instead of posted up, but it made me happy regardless. I finished with a little crook jib and called it a night. Well, after one more slappy crook on the way to the car of course. I had gotten new custom orthotic insoles earlier in the day. They felt good.

(setup 8.25″ null atomic cowboy, venture 5.25 awake lows, 50mm bones stf v1, 3 washers on the inside of each axle, venom 91a bushings, new balance numeric 345 black size 11, custom orthotic insole)

skate journal: lazy sunday solo mellow bank spot (dec 3, 2017)

Posted in New Deck, setup change, Skate Journal on December 4th, 2017 by corpo

I’m not sure what it is about me going to this spot on Sundays. It’s normally after a lot of skating and I’m just too lazy to leave town, organize a session or try hard. After hanging with the fam for awhile I arrived on a beautiful afternoon. I had setup a new 8.25″ board and put some 8″ high Ventures on it. Normally I dislike Venture 5.2 highs and prefer the lows, but I’m trying to stay on highs. I tightened them more than normal, maybe that will help. They felt fine. I warmed up with shoves, fakie bigspin and nollie bigspin on the bank. Then started trying to ollie the little gap above because I would like to do a line there for Stubborns. I was thinking something that starts with front 180 and ends at the bank. But wow that gap is harder than it looks. You can either curve from around a corner and hope the timing works out or get one push and hope it works out. I chose the one push route. I rarely landed it. I think part of it was how lazy I was being, but it’s still hard. I only got a couple fakie flips after it which are hard too because of cracks and rough concrete. On the bank I did a couple fakie varial flips which could work in the line, or halfcab flip. After awhile I just raced between 360 flip and switch flip. Came close to a switch flip, but the 360 flip came somewhat quickly. I tried fakie heels for awhile too, but gave up after almost credit carding myself. I went across the street to do a front tail on the escalator ledge. I was really sore by then though. I did one terrible stall and left it at that.

(setup 8.25″ null atomic cowboy, venture 5.8 v-hollow high, 50mm bones stf v1, 3 washers on the inside of each axle, venom 91a bushings, new balance numeric 345 black size 11, powerfeet pinnacle orthotic insole)

skate journal: flatground friday with dave at the hockey rink (nov 17, 2017)

Posted in Favorite, setup change, Skate Journal on November 17th, 2017 by corpo

Skipped out of a busy day of work for a flatground friday with Dave at the Blue Skies hockey rink. It was warm enough out, but pretty windy at times and rain was blowing in from somewhere. It was hard to find the motivation to begin with. I brought my quiver. Dave brought his putter. So I basically started on my putter too. I didn’t really like it so I went to my 8.25″ setup with venture wides. It felt great. Really great actually, I went on to have a great day for me. I mean I struggled with kickflips, but most other tricks felt good. I had some heelflips right away and in a couple tries got a really sketchy varial heel. It hyped me up. Halfcab flips felt good too, got a first try fakie bigflip. Got a nollie varial flip out of nowhere (thanks for trying Dave and reminding me) and a first try fakie varial flip. Keep in mind I was going so slow for all of these tricks. I couldn’t quite get trefilp, halfcab heel or fakie heel. I ended on a backside flip that took way too many tries. The smaller board with tighter trucks felt great for flip tricks. Dave had a really good fakie 360 shove, a bunch of lines with no comply 180, switch no comply 180, switch no comply shove all casual, cabs, front shoves, lots of kickflips, No treflips unfortunately. That trick is hard when it’s windy. I left back for work feeling hyped. It’s been awhile since I’ve landed so many tricks.

skate journal: back on ventures!!! life is better. short roll at the school (nov 14, 2017)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on November 15th, 2017 by corpo

Feeling exhausted from a long night/morning at work I rolled over to the school on a breezy night. I played on the curb for a few minutes doing different stalls then went behind the school to the rock section above. I just did stalls back and forth then started trying to ride across the closer ledge the narrow way. It’s scary for me to ollie onto something that ends quickly. Landing it felt really cool. Then I tried a longer line of halfcab flip, ollie onto the further one the long way, then the closer one the short way. Never got it, and got too tired and the wind was getting me so I pushed home. I really like having these rocks there, I feel like it’s helping my ollies.

skate journal: solo louisville on a cool night (nov 6, 2017)

Posted in New Deck, New Trucks, New Wheels, setup change, Skate Journal on November 7th, 2017 by corpo

Went to Louisville park after a constructive night of loading footage and helping with dishes. There were a couple scooter kids when I got there. The temperature was slightly above freezing, but it didn’t feel that cold. I had a whole new complete so I expected and had a slow start. My first ride on grind was fun because of how fast my new Indys grinded. Indys? Yeah I’m trying them. I’ve really been liking the 8.5″, but wanted to reduce the wheelbase a little. Indys have a narrower wheelbase then Ventures. Simple solution. I also got the 8.25″ trucks so I would get a tiny bit quicker of a flip. Yes I’m a nerd. Back to skating, it took a bit before I started ollieing and stuff, but once I did it felt good. Got front 50s right away, noseslides, baby ollies. A skater showed up around now that flew around the bowls and wouldn’t say hello to save his life. I tried some lines as always and a bunch of silly tricks I only do when basically no one is around. Like ollies over the hip that I would normally be too embarrassed to do. My fav line was front shove on flat, crook the ledge, roll in to the snake run then a few back 50s and rock ‘n rolls. Had some fun fakie flips, got a halfcab noseslide, switch noseslides, but couldn’t do the over the top back 50. Got front 50, front 50 front 180 out, front 5-0, front 50 shove. Carved the pool a little. Got kickflip to fakie and backside on the bank, somewhat close to treflip fakie, didn’t get treflip on flat either. It was still a fun night though. Another skater had come and gone. At the end it was just me and an owl up on a light pole. It was cool. The indys seemed good, although stiff. It might be because I chose harder bushings or because it below freezing by the end of the night.

(setup 8.5″ null rabethica, indy black titanium 144s, spitfire f4 classic 53mm yellow/orange swirl, 4 washers inside each axle, venom 94a bushings, bones swiss, lakai manchester grey size 11.5, spenco thinsole, adidas majerus insole)

skate journal: lazy day afternoon at southern hills with saul (oct 7, 2017)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on October 9th, 2017 by corpo

Slept in late on a breezy Saturday. Had a few chores and ran boards to Crisis. Time seemed to fly by and before I knew it the afternoon had almost gone by. I biked over to meet Saul at Souther Hills. It’s been awhile since I’ve been there. The bike ride had my legs warmed up, but feeling weird. Started out mostly n the lower stair. Saul got some front 50s. It was sick! I think he also got back 50 and got up on a boardslide on a bench. I also saw him get into a front axle stall on the upper stair. Dang pop! I kind of got in a groove. Had a few noseslides, boardslides, but struggled with crooks. Had some 50s on the stair, ollied up the 2. Then we skated this parking block area for awhile which was fun. The curb didn’t grind too well. Saul would eventually get a few solid slappies on it, almost a feeble. I only got slappy crooks. There was also a fun manual pad there. I got manual and a few tries for nose manual which was really fun feeling. Saul worked on his ollies up the curb and even put a few into manual. My flip tricks were working okay. No treflips, but halfcab flips and b/s flip I think. Oh yeah, I had messed with my setup even though I’m not supposed to. I put an old Jason 8.5″ deck, swapped out baseplates for the forged/hollow axle, added a tiny riser. It felt good.

(setup null rabethica 8.5″ deck, venture 5.8 v-light, 1/16″ riser, bones medium bushings no washers, 52mm spitfire f4 radial slim green/black, new balance numeric 212 burgundy size 11, spenco 3/4 thinsoles, footprints 5mm insole)
