skate journal: short research ledge frustration (aug 24, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 25th, 2017 by corpo

Went to the research ledge after running a few errands. It was just getting dark. I did a few little ollies and stuff before doing my new warm up of trying kickflips until I land one. 3rd try, better than normal. I got terrible boardslide, noseslide. I took advantage of the remaining light and did one trick on the street, then ollied up and bailed a ledge trick. I was not feeling the big setup. I did okay with flip tricks though. Especially considering how sore I was. Back 50s though, couldn’t do one to save my life. It made me mad. I got a couple front 50s though. They were more like stalls because I hate skating that ledge uphill, but it was nice to know I was getting up on it. I tried a bunch of switch varial flips going uphill. Some were close. Then I couldn’t land a crook. Seriously. That is my favorite thing about that ledge and I couldn’t do it. I left pretty mad and really not liking the bigger setup.

skate journal: post swimming flatground fun until the wind kicked in (aug 23, 2017)

Went swimming after work. Then still had energy so hit the dog park. My legs felt good. Really good. Like the best they have in months. My warm up went quicker than normal. Quick enough that when Dave showed I was landing halfcab flips and trying more. I got a line of fakie bigflip, pop shove, first try heelflip, 360 flip where I put both hands down. It wasn’t a make, but I did land on it. I was hyped. I would land on several more, but never got a clean one. Dave should move to Boulder because it’s rad being able to meet up so easily. But for now it’s cool he’s working in Boulder. He did a lot of fakie shoves to get warmed up. Tried cab bigspins, got backside bigspin, landed the worst kickflip I’ve seen him land (sorry Dave, but that was amazing), several good kickflips, shoves, nollie 180s.. Whoa. I was trying a line of b/s flip then fakie treflip when some crazy wind kicked in. The b/s flips were terribly slow, but I like how I landed without tic tac’ing for once. Never got on a fakie tre, but I did commit. I blame the wind. Then we just skated the painted area trying tricks. I tried nollie tre and never got one. Dave tried nollie flips and switch heels. They were flipping right, but he didn’t get his feet on one either. Fun day, best I’ve felt in a long long time. Swimming is good.

After a nice visit with Eric at MRKT we went to Fossil. The park was basically empty, just one 30-something skater ripping. I had a big new 8.5″ deck and it felt weird. I warmed up on the top of the park. Rob was up there too at times, but Dave was mostly just below. My legs felt quite sore, but they were working alright for awhile. It has been a long time since I’ve skated a 3 stair. I had a warm up line of front 180 down the 3, switch front 180 up the curb, kickflip off the curb. It hyped me up. Boardsliding the curb off the drop is so fun. Rob did kickflip then beanplant down the 3. Then we started working on lines with back 180 down the 3. Rob won. Nose manual, then ollie up the ledge then back 180 down. So good. I kind of got it. Kickfip up the curb, ollie up the ledge, but the back 180 I stuck and fell. I say “kind of got it” because had the landing not been tore up from years of people landing primo I am confident I would have rode away. After that I struggled getting the ollie again so I gave up and joined Rob and Dave below. The main ledges felt tall to me. I struggled with any confidence. I would end up getting a few crooks that felt good and some slow/bad front 50s, but that was about it. Rob had some nice back 50 back 180s over the bricks on the curb. Dave nice front and back 50s. Dave did some cool ollies from the deck to the curved ledge I’ve never seen anyone skate before. The Cheeyas showed and it was hard to keep skating with them destroying so hard. Bo rules. He did front 50 kickflip out, almost back 50 treflip out, back 50 the 7 stair, ollie over the double set rail. Street Jaeson is a treat. Fastplant the 9 stair hubba into the bank, boardslide the double set rail, easy basic grinds. Hayden did front smith pop up onto the ledge, gap back 50, back back lip, wallie the 6 stair hubba, gap to manual, etc. Taylor was ripping too. Solid 50s, ollie, etc. Fort Collins dudes can skate anything. Dave closed the session by ollieing the Carroll gap. So sick.

skate journal: solo early broomfield then safeway (aug 20, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 20th, 2017 by corpo

Wanted to hang with the kids so I went to Broomfield park before they woke up. Now that may sound really early, but actually I left around 9am and they were still sleeping. Teenagers. There was already someone there going for a #bftriple when I got there. It was hot again. I felt better than the day before and credit ibuprofen for that. I had taken my bigger setup with me too. 8.38 with Venture wides. The trucks felt loose and kind of awesome. I didn’t do my normal flow for warm up because I didn’t want to get in the way. But things worked. I have completely lost back 50s so one goal was to get a back 50 on the blue box without cheating and going over the corner. I got a couple. Well technically they were grinds, but more like stalls that grinded a little. Oh well one trick off the list for the day. The next was fakie 50 which took fewer tries. Couldn’t get a fakie nosegrind. Had some crooks on the black ledge, front 50s. Boneless over the tiny bar is always fun. I tried a line of kickflip on the hump (kind of a frontside flip, but not really), front 180 into the mellow bank then halfcab noseslide on the black ledge. Never quite got the halfcab noseslide. The park got more crowded, I wanted some shade so I left to Safeway ledge.

I was sore, but was hyped on shade and grinding a real ledge. i got a few back 50s early that felt great. I had a goal of 10 tricks without the silly no-ollie noseslides. I got front 50, front 5-0, back 50, a lame-but-new back 50 front 180 out where I turned off the front truck, a halfcab noseslide that felt good, what I thought was a front smith, but clearly is not. Got into front crooks for the first time in awhile, came close to fakie 50 (the close wall weirds me out). I didn’t try much for flip tricks. Went home to hang with the fam around noon.

Met Dave at Broomfield park a lot later than I said I would. I was very sore from skating flat and then swimming the night before. So it took me awhile to get going. Rob showed about the time that Dave started trying the line above. It didn’t take Dave long to get it. Jake showed around then too. It was getting hot fast. Rob’s legs weren’t up to par and he wisely bounced. I wish I was able to listen to my body like that, but instead I stubbornly battled soreness and heat, but did have fun. The ollie onto the blue box then boardslide down the parking block was fun. Dave did it down the box he boardslide it up. Jake warmed up quickly with a 3 trick line of manual to boardslide, every try blunt to fakie on the quartapotty then fakie back tail on the blue box. During that time I was trying a dream line of kickflip out of the bank, kickflip to fakie on the hump, halfcab flip into the bank. I didn’t get far, only landed a couple of the first kickflips. I was bumming on how unstable my setup felt. Darn high trucks. They just don’t feel right on an 8.25. Dave had some action going on in the corner involving the steep bank, but I didn’t see. We played a game of SKATE that Jake won. He gets me letters on treflip every time now. Argh. I did have a few tricks that felt alright. Then we got some food and came back to see Jack and Carleigh ripping. There were a bunch of others too working on their #bftriple lines and it was a blast to watch. It got me hyped. But I was really sore and it was super hot out.

poser of the month

Got out of work pretty early and went to the Dog Park. It was hot. I had about 20-30 minutes before Dave showed and believe it or not, skating was working. I don’t remember my first warm up run, but I got to a point quickly where I was trying halfcab flip, heelflip, kickflip, nollie treflip. I never got the nollie treflip, but I did land a nollie 3 shove on accident. Ha ha. Also got some bad f/s halfcab flips, struggled with fakie flips. Didn’t really try treflips. Dave had a cab, front shoves (we both struggled with), a bunch of fakie shoves as his warm up, bigspins galore, tried a lot of different tricks. Then we kind of hung in the painted area and did slow attempts at harder tricks for us. I tried varial heel for awhile and got really close. They were flipping nice. Dave was trying treflips and getting close then varial heels and got close and then treflips again and got close. He had a line I can’t remember now. Started with kickflip and had a back big in it. He tried on my board for a bit and got super close to a treflip. One of these days it’ll happen Dave!

skate journal: flatground depression that gets a little better (aug 17, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 18th, 2017 by corpo

Been feeling really down because my legs feel terrible. I was too scared to go anywhere so I went in front of the house and gave up after two painful ollies and shoves. I sat inside for awhile pouting and chatting with a couple people. Dave told me I couldn’t quit and somehow it was motivation to try again. I was wearing some old toddler shoes I had purchased awhile ago and felt like trying (NB# 212 with rubber toe caps). I went straight to posing kickflips and they didn’t hurt too bad. So I kept at it and got a few kickflips which felt good. I probably skated for about 30 minutes. Only got a couple tricks (fakie flip, halfcab flip, half cabs, fakie shoves), but more importantly I felt both mentally and physically better.

skate journal: post pj hype can’t make my knees work (aug 14, 2017)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on August 15th, 2017 by corpo

Ah yes, the highly anticipated NB video Tricolor with the PJ part came out. It was good. I was pretty hyped and wanted to start ledge training. I went to the research ledge. I was pretty tired and out of it even though I was trying to feel hyped. I had put smaller axle’s back on. 8″ highs. They felt great. I landed my first 15 kickflips or so. Actually got first try heelflip too, was 5/5 on halfcab flips, got a few f/s halfcab flips. I had started with lines. Ollie up the curb, nollie on flat, noseslide. Shove on flat, ollie up the curb, noseslide to fakie. Then halfcab flip on flat, ollie up the curb, back 50. Got the worst back 50 ever. Tried f/s halfcab flip on flat, front 180 up the curb, halfcab noseslide on the ledge. Got into a few, but never got the hc noseslide. I need to learn to put the board a little in front of me. I had done a front board pop out, front noseslide first try, but couldn’t do another front nose at all. Argh. I told myself I was gonna stick with my old rule of having to land a back 50 and a 360 flip before doing a crook, but I never got a 360 flip and my knees started hurting. Tried a couple crooks, but the knees were just too sore so I went home feeling defeated. At least I had the first hour feeling pretty good. And hell yeah PJ!

La Alma-Lincoln skatepark Denver

Made a run to Emage and they suggested I check out this little park. It was sunny and hot out, no one was there except a couple kids on bikes briefly. The little ledge is pretty good, but on more of a hill than it looks. Easy backside, hard frontside for me. The quarterpipes are a little weird too. I couldn’t really figure out the flow, but I didn’t skate them too much. I skated slow and had very little confidence and shortly the pain took over. Ugh. Tricks I got, noseslide fakie, front board, back board, front 50, intentional front 5-0, switch noseslides, halfcab noseslide. One crooks was fun as I was trying to go to fakie, but ended up doing a shifty out. Couldn’t manual it. Left not feeling very happy.

skate journal: broomfield again with rob and fuzz (aug 12, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 13th, 2017 by corpo

After a morning of working on my mom’s garage then driving down from Buena Vista I eventually went to Broomfield park to meet Fuzz and Rob. It was dry in Boulder, but really wet in Broomfield. Apparently it had just hailed. I got to the park and one dude was skating through the puddles like it was nothing. I avoided the wet area below and just skated flat and the little hump which was dry. My body was feeling okay. I tried kickflip, nollie to fakie, switch front shove. Never got the switch front shove. Then I started to think about a line I would want to do for the #bftriple contest. So I mostly started doing halfcab flips and no comply shoves. I got a few then noticed the bottom area had dried up enough to skate. Oh yeah, I had put Venture wides on because I absolutely hated those Thunders. I can’t say I was 100% hyped on them because they are so big, but I can say they felt infinitely better than the Thunders. I started trying my line. Ollie up the blue bank, no comply front shove to fakie, halfcab flip on flat, no comply flip on the parking block. I got close a few times. Rob and Fuzz finally showed and unfortunately so did the loud weirdo beginner that was there last time. It took me down for a bit and I could not longer do no comply front shoves it seemed. As Rob and Fuzz were cruising the park I did manage to get the line. The halfcab flip was terrible, but oh well. So Rob started filming .. and filming .. and filming as I flailed around. I got to a point when halfcab flips stopped working (I should say I was hyped on how many I did though – they were feeling good) so I switched to the Brandow (switch front nose). 100 tries later I gave up and settled for the one above. Thanks so much for filming Rob! I went on to film Fuzz after that. He got a line 2nd try, but then improved it to what you see above. It was good seeing him work for it. Rob had some nice front noseslides, front 50s, front tail, halfcab noseslide, crooks, nose manual the blue bank. Yeah, shredding. After Fuzz got his line we called it. Kind of bummed I didn’t really other than trying that line, but hyped to get something for it.
