skate journal: solo fossil in the heat (july 19, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 20th, 2019 by corpo

After an early day of work, a drive to MRKT, chilling with Eric, I went to Fossil Creek. I arrived to an empty park. I guess people don’t want to skate in upper 90s? It was hot for sure, but cooling off every minute so it didn’t bother me and there was no humidity. I started on the long curb up top. I was feeling the effects of a full work week on my body. Ugh. But I was able to get quite a few basics quickly and moved down to the bigger area. I would hit the long manny pad then ledge and the opposite coming back. It was fun, but I was struggling to ollie up the curb. I got an ollie up, noseslide to fakie, switch front 180 off. Got a 2nd try halfcab noseslide, was able to front 50 the taller part of the long ledge the first few tries (but would later struggle). Flip tricks were not going well as my shoes were so dead and thin. I did have halfcab flip and b/s flip, but didn’t commit to treflip. Another dude joined for awhile. He was working on noseslides and treflips. I tried to manual the manual pad. I kind of got one with a tiny tilt. I am terrible at manuals. Took a bit to get a posted up crooks, but man it felt so great. That ledge rules for crooks. A couple tries later I got so close to crooks shove. I took a break for a bit and tried some Adidas 3st.003s I had in the car. They lasted one noseslide attempt that almost rolled my ankle. I was going to leave, but the park was empty and I’m really stubborn. I needed to get at least one back 50, front tail on the curb. I got a front 50 shove on the lower part of the long ledge, front 5-0, and finally managed a terrible back 50. Next try I did an accidental back 5-0. That made me happy so I left exhausted and had a fun drive home with the windows open and music cranked.

skate journal: brief warm up before filming jack (july 18, 2019)

Met Jack at a guard rail to drop spot. He needed to warm up before trying tricks. He warmed up by doing 50s without transferring. I did some nose jibs to fakie, wallride nollies and couldn’t ollie a tiny curb. Maybe if I would have stoked Jack out he would have gotten his trick rather than him having to witness the worst skateboarder ever trying to ollie a curb.

skate journal: fun times across the street dodging kids (july 17, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 18th, 2019 by corpo

After a tough day at work on a hot evening I went across the street to meet Saul for a short one. Things started off good. Saul was already doing some of the longest slappies I’ve ever seen. I took a bit to remember how to do a slappy. I guess it’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve been here. Saul had a first try back 180 out of the curb cut that was awesome. After awhile two groups of parents with kids showed up in the lot and appeared to be staking claim to the same area. It was quiet annoying, but still fine for awhile. I had some fun 50s, slappy crooks, tried to do kick back tail on the tiny bank. Had a fun front tail back 180 on it. Saul had some frontside slappies going. He said something about using less angle and more front truck and all of a sudden it felt like I could front slappy. It ruled. I ended up getting a lot of them. This is when the parents / kids became almost too much. Either they were totally clueless and just standing right in the way or being passive aggressive. I don’t know. It was super annoying though. My last thing was a front slappy landing right before a bike girl then finally got the kickflip from the curb cut to the parking lot. Fun way to end it.

skate journal: same dog park, same suck, bigger board (july 16, 2019)

Posted in New Deck, setup change, Skate Journal on July 17th, 2019 by corpo

After work on a very hot Tuesday I stopped by the dog park with about an hour to skate. When I first got there only a couple people were skating. Withing a few minutes though another 10 or so people showed and all were skating hard. It was the first time I was annoyed with the crowds. Everyone there was around 20. The bigger board felt big, but it felt right. I struggled with lots of basics. About the only positives were that I had some okay back 50s on the low part of the black box, nollie back tails the little narrow ledge. I struggled with front 50 on the bench, halfcab noseslide the bench, crooks the tall part of the black box. I ended by finally ollieing over the wallie barrier without any wheel bonk. Then I went home for dinner and saw my friends were skating Glenn Close. 🙁

skate journal: hot morning dog park before filming (july 14, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 16th, 2019 by corpo

On a surprisingly hot morning I met up with Rob, Chad and Kevin at the Dog park. This older dude Will was there too which I haven’t really skated with before. Daryl and Justin showed up after awhile too. I had put smaller trucks on again like an idiot and hated it basically the entire day with the exception of a couple halfcab flips. It was a fun session. Rob had halfcab boardslides on the butter bench, 50 180s, noseslide the top part of the black box (I need a better name for this ledge). Kevin was doing Kevin right away. 50s, nosegrind, 5-0 the top part of the black box. He even crook bonked the new super tall flat bar. I committed to nosegrind on the low black box, but never got far with it. Had a couple good feeling fakie flips, halfcab flips, but couldn’t heelflip. Will got the pole jam after we both failed to treflip. Then he got one. Daryl and Justin were rad to watch. Daryl had some steezy new PJ shoes that made me jealous. Chad had a cool line of nose manual, boardslide to fakie, halfcab, front board the mid square rail. I also saw a nice back 5-0 first try. Kevin tried to get me to back 50 the low part of the black ledge by doing doubles with me back 50’ing the top. We never got it. But I got it first try on my own. Ha. Then I went on to not do kick back 50. I don’t remember much more. The thing about skating the same spot a lot makes it harder to remember what went down that day. Oh yeah, Jack showed up and skated long enough to do a few rad tracks and snap his tail doing a nollie heel over the barrier. That is a big nollie heel! I felt like I got heat stroke and it never went away the rest of the day. Jack got a banger in the fort, but him and Jack came up short at the bench spot. Doh.

skate journal: broomfield morning with a stellar crew (july 13, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 15th, 2019 by corpo

On a warm morning I drove to Broomfield to meet up with Kevin, Rob, Fuzz, Eric, Dave L. I was late. I’m always late. But I did have a good reason this time (helping my daughter get ready for a funeral). I played a game of SKATE with Dave L and Kevin to get warmed up. Kevin smoked us. We had a few tricks until Kevin got loose and then it was over with the nollie/switch flips. Looked like Dave L could get both those, but didn’t land them. Rob was in demo mode. Straight killing it. 50 180s, manuals, front noseslides. Dave L had some cool manual combos. Manual the blue bank sideways to quick nose manual up the brown ledge. Kevin was killing the ledges as he does. Back tail, switch crooks, switch nosegrind 180, etc. Eric has been charging hard lately. Crooks, back 50s, heelflips, skating fast, looking good. I was stoked to see Fuzz. He chilled awhile, but got things going. I was struggling so I just started hucking switch front noseslide shoves. Kevin wanted to film it so I kept trying. I got a bad one kind of quick, but never a clean one. Some felt so good though. Fuzz got some fakie 50 halfcabs, fakie nosegrind 180s. Then I filmed Kevin get a sick line of switch flip into the bank, a couple ledge tricks and then a nollie tre out of the bank. Wow. Then we were off to 303. Fun morning. Great dudes.

skate journal: dog park after work rob, dan, matt (july 12, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 13th, 2019 by corpo

Right after work on a warm Friday afternoon I went to the dog park to Meet Rob and maybe Matt. Matt would show a little later. Dan too. Rob and I were in the warm up process when Dan showed up and quickly started shredding. He is one of our faves. Kind of early on I got a line of manual the smallest box, ollie the kinked rail, wallie the barrier. Felt cool even though it was done badly. Rob was killing manuals, nose manuals, nose manual 180, nollie lips, back 50s, front 50s, etc, etc. I was pretty hit or miss. I came close to a front 5-0 180 on the little part of the black box, but couldn’t lock into 5-0 again. Got a line that took awhile of noseslide to fakie the tall part of the box, halfcab flip (which took way too many tries), wallie the barrier, bailed a treflip. Dan got the marathon line and about 5 other tricks across the hard top of the box. Matt showed up and quickly did a bunch of ledge tricks like nothing. The first front noseblunt was unreal. I tried some kick back 50s, halfcab crooks, gotta get those. All in all kind of another disappointed showing from me. Rob got close to front nosegrinds, that would have been sick. He grinds the whole thing. I was too scared to commit to one. Love me the dog park.

skate journal: dog park evening session (july 11, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 12th, 2019 by corpo

After my first day back at work in a long time and a nap to recover I went to the dog park on a hot evening. This was my first time going there solo in the evening. There weren’t too many people. Tyler and Veronica were the only people I knew. It seems like a popular spot for college students. Maybe they used to go to the Boulder park, but I wouldn’t know because I never went there. I started out slow, immediately not liking my setup and at no point did I like my setup. I had put the wider axles on. I don’t like wider axles than deck width. Pretty quickly I had a couple great feeling crooks on the tall part of the black box. I tried again later (photo) and couldn’t do it. I messed around for awhile before wanting to try a line. Nose manual the box, ollie the kinked flatbar, wallie the barrier, treflip on flat, crooks the black box. I never got past the ollie. Ugh. I could barely nose manual too. It was kind of depressing. I did get the wallies basically every try at least. Got a halfcab flip. Couldn’t commit to nosegrind on the low part of the black ledge. Took a long time to back 50 it. Took even longer to halfcab noseslide the metal ledge. Argh. Couldn’t halfcab crook it either. Went home questioning everything.

skate journal: short morning session at york (july 10, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on July 12th, 2019 by corpo

After very little sleep we were up early to the York park since that’s where the family was going to pick me up. We were all sore and tired. Zoey joined us. She looks like she has a really fun time on a skateboard. It was cool. She had some side rocks, some board jump offs and stuff. Not sure how to write about it as they aren’t official olympic style tricks. Ha. Joe took a few tries to get a kickflip to fakie so I had to do it first try and rub it in his face. That’s about all I remember from me. Oh and kind of a frontside sal flip thing, but I had to go to tail. Eric’s trick is hard. Then my family showed and we were out. Well, they skated a little longer. Love seeing those dudes.
