skate journal: short broomfield solo (dec 19, 2017)

After work, a quick meal and a Null drop at Crisis I went to Broomfield park on a cool night. There were a few people when I got there and they were all biking or skating. It was too cold for any lurkers to be sitting around. I warmed up hitting a basics not really with anything in particular. I never really tried anything long, just kind of cruised all over hitting or missing some basics. I had a good feeling crooks on the black ledge. Tried a line for awhile that kept getting longer. Started with front or back 180 into the bank, halfcab noseslide, tiny ollie on the brick qp, noseslide 270 shove the brown ledge. Never got the nose shove. Then I started trying it with a front 50 front 180 out on the black ledge, fakie flip out of the mellow bank, then turn around and start with the 180 into the bank. I never got the fakie flip although I was close. I started trying a couple nose manuals on the brown bank, and then decided I should line it out even further by starting with an ollie down the six stair. I bailed a couple, it actually took a lot for me to even jump down the stairs. But I had a couple treflips in a row on flat that I thought would hype me up enough to do it, but nope I bailed. Then the lights shut off.

skate journal: lots and lots of boardslides and then some fun curb action (dec 17, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 18th, 2017 by corpo

After chilling and getting some stuff done on a cold Sunday morning I went to BMOCA to meet Rob and Dave. Dave had signed up to film me try a line I wanted to do there. Poor Dave. I got there first and skated the ledge across the street for awhile. Some dog was going nuts barking non-stop and the owner brought the dog over wanting me to teach it how to skateboard. Ugh. Warming up went pretty good though. Flip tricks were working. I think I had a couple mini lines of fakie flip then halfcab noseslide. Also halfcab flip then crooks then almost nollie tre. This is about when Dave and Rob showed up. I was really struggling with frontside grinds on the ledge. I got a few 5-0s that were supposed to be 50s, but they didn’t feel good. Rob got on some crooks right away. Halfcab noseslide, front noseslide. Dave got going on the ledge too. Back 50 where it looked like he was trying nollie shove out after doing a varial flip on flat. I went over and did a few warm up boardslide attempts and then tried kickflips off the curb until Dave was ready to film. The next hour or so was me trying to do 3 basic tricks. Boardslide, kickflip, front 50. The first two went alright. I didn’t land everyone of either, but I was landing them. But the f’ing front 50 killed me every time I got there. There was only one that I locked into, but it stuck. I wanted to try the Helmstetter instead of 50 (front nose 270 out), but that didn’t work either. I was pretty much over it and decided to throw a 360 flip off the curb instead. Two tries later I landed one of the best treflips I’ve done. It felt amazing. The noise that Dave makes when I finally land the line is hilarious. Thanks a million Dave, i think the boardslide then treflip is better anyway so I guess it all worked out.

Then we went over to Saul’s curb which was way more fun than I remember. I did a few slappy crooks, something that hopefully resembled slappy front crooks, 50s and posed kick back tails. Then I filmed Rob and Dave. Rob had some rad slappy crooks to back 50. He also did a rad wallie to manual and later on a front slappy. Dave had a bunch of front slappys, and I filmed him do slappy crooks shove, front shove back 50 and some flatground after. That curb is good. We’ll be back.

skate journal: dog park then valmont bank with the crew (dec 16, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 17th, 2017 by corpo

Did some stuff in the morning then met up at the dog park. I was there first, Rob shortly after, Garrett, Riley and Fuzz a little later. Rob and I were there awhile and we were struggling. My first kickflips felt good, but I kept bailing fakie flips and halfcab flips weren’t working. The stiff PJs are hard to get used to, but my heel pain is slowly going away so I guess they are helping. Rob had some lines going. Cabs, front shoves, kickflips, several b/s flips. Came close to treflip. I tried the fakie bigflip, varial flip, treflip line some more. Had some better feeling fakie bigflips, but still couldn’t manage the treflip even though I was committing and felt like they should work. Rob was working on varial heels when Riley showed. Riley gave him some advice and went on to do it first try. Jerk! Ha. Riley’s flippers are top notch. I hope that skating with him more again rubs off on me. His switch heels! Garrett had some styley treflips and manuals. Dude is smooth. Fuzz showed, cruised around pushing then did every shove variation. It was cool. I had a good slam on a f/s halfcab flip. We bounced across the street.

I was thinking we were gonna skate manuals, but after I showed Riley a wallride we all assembled at the bank which ended up being quite fun. Well, I sucked it up struggling even with kickflips. Got close to treflip fakie before I started filming Riley. Garrett was trying wallrides too. Dave, Rob and Fuzz were ripping the bank. Fuzz did the Gonz move (cab kickturn late ollie), fakie 540 kickturn and would go on to get a sick front nosepick on the curb of the bank. Rob did the bank Joe Hamilton (yeah so Joe has a ramp trick (50 to rock), ledge trick (front lip to front 50 to shove or some similar variation) and the bank trick (cab bigspin)) and would do it to boardslide. Riley’s run was nuts. I’m most blown away by how fast he was going for the halfcab. He didn’t even push, just took a few steps and threw down and he was flying. Garrett got a cool front tail b/s flip out. Dave did a cool front tail shove. Then everyone was out, but I wanted to skate some more. Rob was kind enough to film a line I wanted to do. Front 180 the little gap up top, fakie shove on flat, halfcab flip on the bank. I got it pretty quickly. Everything felt good for me, but I was super embarrassed about how I looked. Oh well, it’s an awkward spots and I actually linked up the tricks I wanted. Decent day. Hyped on everyone stacking a clip or two.

skate journal: not the best flatground friday (dec 15, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 17th, 2017 by corpo

On a beautiful afternoon I met Dave at the dog park. I got there first and was struggling really bad with the warm ups. Almost enough I thought I might just stop. But Dave showed and we skated. It’s what we do. I couldn’t hardly kickflip so I tried treflips and got the first couple. They had a brief hand touch, but they felt good. Dave was really struggling with kickflips which was rare to see. He even struggled with back bigspins, but he made up for it by doing a few switch back bigs. Whoa! I tried a line of fakie bigflip, varial flip, treflip. I never got it and and when I actually landed the first two tricks they were full of tic tacs. But that would be a good line for me. Couldn’t get a nollie varial flip or treflip, switch tricks felt impossible. It got dark and Dave set up a light. He was trying nollie shoves then treflips. He got pretty close, but didn’t get both feet on any. I did the little no comply back shove revert and then it was time to head home.

skate journal: quick one at research ledge (dec 14, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 15th, 2017 by corpo

Had about an hour on a cool night to skate. I had driven past the research ledge on the way home from work and saw there was no snow or ice on it so I went there. I started out riding down the long stairs a couple times. The redid the concrete above the stairs so they are less sketchy. Then I went down towards the ledge area and had an alright session. I skated hard, didn’t land a whole lot, but it was cold and dark so I expected it. Did better at crooks than normal, landed most of the ones I tried. Failed at front 50 for awhile, but got a decent one. A few sketchy back 50s and halfcab noseslides. Flatground started pretty good. Got the regular/fakie part of the straight 8. Tried to line out a heelflip then crooks (or crooks to fakie) then treflip for awhile. The heelflip was scary since I was trying it on the downhill part of the sidewalk. Ended up having to leave and got a hands down treflip to make the quota.

skate journal: brief garage manuals without ollie’ing (dec 13, 2017)

Went into the garage on a nice night with no energy. I did the basic twirly bird manuals and it cheered me up some after a bad day of work.

skate journal: mellow broomfield session with rob (dec 12, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 14th, 2017 by corpo

On a nice night I met up with Rob at Broomfield park. There were only a few people there. My feet have been hurting lately so I wore some PJ shoes looking for some support. It seemed to help with pain, but obviously I missed the flick of vulc shoes. Anyways, I started off pretty good. Lines there are really fun when the park is empty. Around when Rob showed up I started feeling warmed up and had a fun line of front 50, backside flip on the mellow bank, crooks the ledge. The crooks felt really good, but I wouldn’t get another one like that. Doh. Rob was cruising around too lining things out. Manuals, front board, front noseslides, crooks. Saw him nose manny the blue pad, nollie front lipslide on it too. I was trying a line of flip trick (got heelflip and 360 flip) then noseslide the brown ledge, axle stall to fakie the qpotty, switch front 180 the parking block then kickflip way down on the brick qp. I got close, but never put both feet on it. I tried a few more things, nothing special. Tried to nose manny the brown bank, but couldn’t. Rob did it. Then we played a game of SKATE. I got a letter on front shove, two letters on halfcab flip, b/s flip, and lost with fakie 3 shove. I think the only trick I landed was a heelflip. Ugh. At least I left on a good note by boardsliding down the tiny rail for the first time in months.

skate journal: downtown boulder with dave, saul and eric (dec 10, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 14th, 2017 by corpo

Met up with Dave at 10am on a nice Sunday at the Wells Fargo downtown. Dave was on a mission to try a scary boardslide. But first, we attempted to warm up. I was feeling pretty good, did a few backside axle stall on the rough ledge that felt cool, some basic qp tricks on the tiny transition. Dave was doing come cool transfers over the hip. Dave started warming up to his boardslide while I continued to warm up with a fun line. Ollie up the curb from the parking lot, axle stall the rough ledge, 270 rock ‘n roll transfer thing over the hip, slappy crook. It was fun. Randomly Saul hit us up and appeared a few minutes later with Eric. Rad. Dave was deep in trying the boardslide and kinda going crazy. Then a security truck came and sat there so we left. Dave and I ollied the 4 stair on the way to the tea house ledge. We posted up here for awhile. I was freaked out by the bar above the ledge and for good reason because I had a couple front 50 slip outs that almost clocked my chest on it. I would struggle. Got a few front 50s, some accidental slow front 5-0s, a few crook jibs and a very sloppy front 50 shove. I couldn’t get a halfcab noseslide. Doh. Dave was killing it. Front 50s, back 50s, front 50 nollie back 180 out, front 50 nollie shove out, crooks. It was rad seeing Saul skate it. He tried some stuff and got into front 180 50. Eric did front 50, maybe front smith and maybe front 50 180 out. Ha, you would think I would remember.

He was also trying the curb boardslide across the street which I started trying after awhile too. I was embarrassed by my baby steps. I went so slow at the first couple, but I did eventually get enough speed to slide the whole thing and it was fun. Eric almost had it too. Half the time I was too under the boardslide, he was too over it. If we could combine that would make for a lot of makes. Ha. I tried to line it out to the ledge. Boardslide, kickflip off the curb, front 50. Got into it, but we eventually moved on.

We hit the little round thing across from liquor mart. Dave wallied it backside and Eric and I did it frontside. Well, mine was more of an ollie bonk. Saul was hurting the parking blocks with slappys.

Next up was some random terrible mellow brick bank to wood ledge. I couldn’t get into a back axle stall to save my life. Dave was though. He did it frontside too and did a cool boardslide transfer in. I ended up at least making myself smile with a switch nose jib shove out. Saul had some rad powerslides on the bank.

We moved on, ended up near the dentist 5 where Dave did a ride on front 50 that was pretty nuts.

Then we tried to ollie the 5. Eric broke the ice. Dave did it first try. I got really mad at myself for being scared of it. But I would stick with a little line that made me happy enough to commit to it. Switch 180 up the curb, kickflip on flat, ollie the 5. It felt fun to jump down some stairs, but man my feet were hurting. The thin 212s don’t offer much protection.

We headed back to our cars and stuff. Those guys had some slappys on a curb for a bit, I sat and chilled.

Then I filmed Dave attempt the boardslide again. So gnar.

Running a little slow due to a fun night at the Reed Wheels video premiere I met Rob and Fuzz at Crisis. It was one of those days with a million texts and somehow ended up being a small crew. On the way to the spot Fuzz remembered this random skatepark so we hit it. It’s weird. Two quarterpipes separated by 80 feet of pump bumps. There is also a pyramid/flatbar thing. It was super fun to pump, but if you took too much speed into the quarterpipe it was hard to avoid shooting past the coping. We were pretty hyped and giddy on it for a bit, but it did lose it’s appeal a little. All 3 of us got kickflips out of the bump. Fuzz and I got boardslides down the little rail. Rob was doing steezy frontside grinds on the qp. I had a fun line avoiding the pumps. Kickflip off the bump, front disaster the qp, boardslide the little down rail. I tried to treflip the kicker too, but failed. Did get a terrible b/s flip off it first try though. Riley joined us after awhile. With a smoke in his hand he did a perfect 5-0 to fakie that was so neat to see. He had some other moves, posed an ollie from bump to bump, and did the pump run fakie. Fuzz and I hadn’t thought of that so we had to try it too. It was really scary. I only did it once and the last hump almost took me out. Fuzz had this ridiculously awesome halfcab kickturn over one where his front foot drifted off his board and he survived it. Whew.

Then we went to the intended spot. This bank that goes from incredibly mellow to not so mellow. We told Riley no flip tricks for 10 minutes as we warmed up. Fuzz took a few tries to get the Gonz cab ollie, but when he did it was really good. Then he went off. Kickflip to fakie, fakie flip, fakie heelflip, halfcab heelflip, frontside halfcab heelfip, b/s flip, bigflip, dang! Once Riley was allowed to do flip tricks he did them all. Literally it would be easier to list the ones he didn’t do then all the ones he landed. He pops his trick high and it looks good (except the treflip ha ha). He took the most time with switch varial flip, but he put that down too. Then he did the pole dancing. The ollies over the pole were so sick, somehow he said back 180 was easier, but it appears he didn’t quite go over it. Hee hee. My legs were sore, maybe from so much pumping at the skatepark before. So everything was hard for me. Starting with front shove to fakie which took a really long time. I got a few tricks. Kickflip to fakie, b/s flip, frontside tic-tac flip, fakie flip, fakie varial flip, varial flip to fakie, no comply shove to fakie. Rob had some rad beanplants into the bank, tried b/s heelflips for awhile, did some of his patented b/s one foots, b/s flip and was the last one skating. He did cab bigspin. Whoa! Aka the Joe Hamilton. After that we me the FTC crew at the hip spot Fuzz recently brought back to life. Hayden put down an impossible and we all hung out as the temperature dropped. It was a cool day.

skate journal: hectic but awesome flatground friday (dec 8, 2017)

Posted in Favorite, Skate Journal on December 10th, 2017 by corpo

On a very nice Friday afternoon I met Rob and Dave at the dog park. We got there at 4pm and the sun was already setting. Argh. It made for a hectic warmup. I was hyped to see Rob going in on varial heels right away. Dave was trying treflips right away too. I was trying my normal warmup routine and it was kind of a battle. I got really mad when I missed my few halfcab flips, but once I got a couple I went on to have a really good flatground day for me. Kickflip, fakie flip, heelflip, b/s flip, varial flip, fakie varial flip, fakie bigflip, halfcab flips both ways, 360 flip. Near the end I added a couple rare ones. Frontside halfcab heelflip and fakie treflip. Both felt incredibly awesome. I couldn’t get nollie varial flip or nollie treflip, but oh well. Rob was on fire for awhile doing lines with halfcab flip, b/s flip, heelflip, back 360. He came super close to 360 flip and had a pretty good slam on a back bigspin attempt. Dave looked good on his putter (7.75). He did varial flip and fakie varial flip pretty quick, popped his kickflips, came incredibly close to treflip and did his first ever frontside halfcab flip. It was cool to see, he was super hyped. This was one of my favorite flatground sessions in a long time. The fakie 360 flip felt so good. I’m so happy my legs have been mostly working lately and I can get past my basics.
