skate journal: short curb session across the street (dec 7, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 8th, 2017 by corpo

After unloading 30 boxes of boards I chilled for a bit then went across the street. Got the first couple slappy crooks. Did a few 50s each way. Hucked a few random tricks once or twice. Couldn’t get a fakie front 50, but did get a fakie front tail stall. The lights shut off so I went home.

skate journal: freezing cold flatground fun with dave (dec 6, 2017)

I thought I would opt out of skating for the first time in awhile, but next thing I know I’m meeting Dave in the frigid cold to skate flat. When I first to got gray/windy/cold skies I wanted to turn around. Dave was already there though. The wind made the low 30 degree temp feel like it was in the teens. We both started incredibly slow. Fakie/nollie shoves, switch ollies, manuals, no complies, etc. It was kind of a surreal session. I skated slower and more conservative than normal because I didn’t have gloves and I really didn’t want to smack my hand on the cold ground. It was fun though because I was trying lots of random tricks like Creepy Spins and frontside cabs. Then went in on switch varial flips for awhile, couldn’t halfcab flip so did fakie bigflips instead, almost got a nollie bigflip, didn’t try treflips really. Dave was on his putter. He had some good kickflips, shoves and laid in heavy on treflips. Didn’t get as close as he has in the past, but some had a lot of potential. He also hucked some switch flips and had a nice back bigspin to end it.

skate journal: solo campus ledges (dec 5, 2017)

Posted in setup change, Skate Journal on December 6th, 2017 by corpo

On a pretty cool night I was feeling lazy then remembered the little yellow ledge on campus and it got me out of the house. I parked at the meet up lot, did a few slappy crooks then pushed to the yellow ledge (okay, basically curb height but it’s square with angle iron). I had switched to low trucks. Normally when I first switch to lows there is a bit of a hesitancy wondering if I should really be doing it. This time it was solid gold and they felt great. I got front and back 50s second try. The back 50 was cool because it normally takes me awhile to work up the courage to go over the top like that. I didn’t really land much after that though. Got a couple switch crook pivots, one where I almost grinded some. I mostly hucked front nosegrinds which I kind of landed once with a little wheel bonk on the way out. Hucked halfcab crooks, switch front crooks too. But things took a change for the better when I thought of back nosegrind, remembered the angle I used to take at the Vans park and out of nowhere committed to a few. It felt so cool. I think the lows give me a bit more confidence being closer to the board. Anyways, I never landed the back nosegrind, but I did grind a few of them. I wasn’t really expecting to land them yet since you have to pop out there and I’m no Wenning. I did a couple flippers, but not many. Got a first try b/s flip, all kickflips felt good and landed on a treflip or two.

Then I went to the tall ledge. I was pretty tired at this point, but managed a couple noseslides quickly to get me hyped. Got a hands down 360 flip, halfcab flip that felt good. I was really surprised to get a first try ollie onto the ledge (it was super sketchy though). Especially surprised because I couldn’t do it on an 8.5 setup recently, but now with smaller stuff it seemed easier. Hmm. I had a fun run of switch ollie a little crack gap then an absolutely terrible and fun halfcab noseslide. I’m pretty sure the board was basically upright instead of posted up, but it made me happy regardless. I finished with a little crook jib and called it a night. Well, after one more slappy crook on the way to the car of course. I had gotten new custom orthotic insoles earlier in the day. They felt good.

skate journal: some flip attempts in the garage (dec 4, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 4th, 2017 by corpo

On a cold night I was thinking of taking a day off of skating, but instead I went in the garage for awhile. I turned up Dinosaur Jr Glimpse and it sounded so good. I was on the putter for the most part. Got heelflip easy and a treflip. I hucked a bunch of tricks, but never got too close to anything else. Went back to my normal setup for awhile and did a few kickflips. I ended by trying to do fakie flip, fakie varial flip, fakie 360 flip during the last song on the album. I got the first two quick, landed on the fakie tre too, but didn’t land it.

skate journal: lazy sunday solo mellow bank spot (dec 3, 2017)

Posted in New Deck, setup change, Skate Journal on December 4th, 2017 by corpo

I’m not sure what it is about me going to this spot on Sundays. It’s normally after a lot of skating and I’m just too lazy to leave town, organize a session or try hard. After hanging with the fam for awhile I arrived on a beautiful afternoon. I had setup a new 8.25″ board and put some 8″ high Ventures on it. Normally I dislike Venture 5.2 highs and prefer the lows, but I’m trying to stay on highs. I tightened them more than normal, maybe that will help. They felt fine. I warmed up with shoves, fakie bigspin and nollie bigspin on the bank. Then started trying to ollie the little gap above because I would like to do a line there for Stubborns. I was thinking something that starts with front 180 and ends at the bank. But wow that gap is harder than it looks. You can either curve from around a corner and hope the timing works out or get one push and hope it works out. I chose the one push route. I rarely landed it. I think part of it was how lazy I was being, but it’s still hard. I only got a couple fakie flips after it which are hard too because of cracks and rough concrete. On the bank I did a couple fakie varial flips which could work in the line, or halfcab flip. After awhile I just raced between 360 flip and switch flip. Came close to a switch flip, but the 360 flip came somewhat quickly. I tried fakie heels for awhile too, but gave up after almost credit carding myself. I went across the street to do a front tail on the escalator ledge. I was really sore by then though. I did one terrible stall and left it at that.

(setup 8.25″ null atomic cowboy, venture 5.8 v-hollow high, 50mm bones stf v1, 3 washers on the inside of each axle, venom 91a bushings, new balance numeric 345 black size 11, powerfeet pinnacle orthotic insole)

skate journal: safeway ledges with the crew (dec 2, 2017)

Fun day jumping on the ledges @_f_u_z_z @43shifty @fullertrron

After a busy morning I ran to meetup with a session at Safeway ledges. I thought I was going to be the last one, but I ended up getting there first. Ha. But after the first couple slappy noseslides Rob, Fuzz and Dave rolled up. It was quite fun. The warm up process didn’t seem to take anyone too long, but Dave did struggle for awhile which is rare to see. Even with 50s. Rob was hyped to break in his trucks. The same ones he’s had for like 3 weeks already. Ha. He got on some back 50s right away, nollie front lip, front nose the fence ledge, kickflips, b/s flips, bigspin front nose and some incredibly steezy back smiths. Also came super close to treflips. Fuzz went in on fakie front tails. He was going really fast and backed up a couple with quick feet b/s flips. He also did some really good front tailslides with good heelfips after. He also did switch front 180 50 and 5-0. So good. I skated pretty good at times. Got my first two treflip, first try nollie varial flip, did the worst heelflip every (but man it was fun somehow), got a first try slow back 50 which is rare for me. I tried halfcab crooks, front crooks, switch crooks, but never got any. Struggled with halfcab flips and some other flippers. I had put on some small old bones wheels that felt great. I tried switch front 180 50 like Fuzz, except with 1/10 the speed and I hit the wall hard. It hurt. I did a slow, but first try front 50 bean plant out and tried to follow it with a treflip. But I landed wrong and broke my board. Doh. It was really cracked so it wasn’t really a bummer. But the whole session I was thinking about wanting smaller trucks so now this will make me have to decide what to do.
Dave was finally warmed up around then. Ha. He was doing slappy crooks on the tall fence ledge, noseslides on it too. He had a really good front 5-0 180 out, varial flips, maybe a front crook, tried pop shove noseslides and much more I’m forgetting right now.

skate journal: broomfield marathon soreness and cold (dec 1, 2017)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 3rd, 2017 by corpo

Another day off work. Went to Broomfield park on a nice morning ahead of meeting up with Nolan. Trying to warm up didn’t go so well, I felt so sore and I’m not sure why. There were a few other dudes there, all were cool. Although one of them said ‘nice willy grind’ to a crook attempt of mine on the black box. I’m not doubting that it was a terrible crook, but that bummed me out. At least he was hyped on the slappy crooks on the curb. I didn’t land a whole lot. One thing I got was a line of switch noseslide 270 out on the blue box, fakie back smith to fakie on the quarta potty, switch front noseslide shove on the blue box. All were done terribly. Even on the qp trick I did some weird slide out. Oh well. Oh I did have a line earlier of front 50 on the black box, kickflip to fakie on the bank and then a bad halfcab noseslide on the black ledge. Then the wind kicked in fierce and I went to Crisis.

After a couple hours at Crisis I met Dave and Nolan at Broomfield park. There were a few others there, but it was still mostly chill. Dave and I warmed up with switch noseslide variations on the blue box. He was extra sore too. We started mixing in the other obstacles around when Nolan showed up. I was trying some dork lines. Board transfer the brown ledge, nose stall the pier 7 ledge, crooks the ledge. I might have done that, but I definitely almost died trying. Nolan challenged us to a game of SKATE. I was bad and did a one foot just to mess with Dave. He got his revenge with a switch no comply shove. I got a letter on fakie flip. Argh. I was the first out. It did kind of warm me up though. Nolan and Dave were skating the quartapotty to steep qp. Gnarly. Nolan did a front noseblunt on it. Dave did a super chill back tail on it. Saul skated for awhile too. He did his first shove-it ever, boardslid the parking block and ollied onto a few of the obstacles. It was rad. Hayden and Sean showed around then and I resigned my soreness to sit and film for the gram. Nolan, Sean, Hayden and Hayden’s friend Mikey got some good moves. Dave took off. I just kind of wandered around filming in different places. Riley and Garrett showed. Donnie too. It was fun watching so many rippers, but man it got cold just standing around. I was blown away by how quickly Riley was ripping. It was right away. There will be a gram clip soon.

skate journal: flatground then saul’s with good peeps (nov 30, 2017)

Had the day off work again and slept til 9:30. Couldn’t believe it. It put me in a funk that was hard to get out of. After a hike with Liz and some lunch I met Rob and shortly after Dave at the dog park. It was cooler, but still nice out. Rob was already warmed up when I got there. He had a nice line of back 180, switch front 180 then b/s flip. My warm up went okay and I was trying flippers pretty quickly. I struggled with heelflips, but other tricks were working. Rob pulled out a couple plastic parking blocks from the fenced in area which made for some fun spracking options. We all did some basic spracks. It’s so fun. We put them about 10 feet apart so it was fun lining out wallies/no complies/spracks/flippers/180s/etc. Dave had some good fakie and regular shoves. Rob with back 180 then halfcab. He had a pretty good slam on a stop rock and another good slam on a kickflip attempt over a parking block. Doh. I got lucky with a first try fakie bigspin over one, a couple kickflips over. I was most hyped on flippers though. Got a first try fakie bigflip, a really sketch first try fakie heel with some heel drag, 360 flip with a hand down, nollie tre with some weird foot action. Rob took off. Dave settled into a line of back 180 sprack, switch back 180 sprack then either back bigspin or treflip attempt. He had done a casual varial flip earlier on too. I settled into a line of back 180 over a block then fakie treflip. I really wanted to get a fakie tre to complete the trifecta of treflips I can do (can’t do them switch). But we were running late to get to Saul’s, the sun was setting and I had to call it. I got super close. Wheel bite and lack of skill got me.

Then we met Ed and Saul at Saul’s. I rode my 8.5″ setup with huge 53mm wheels (ha). Dave had a few of his roll ins to frontside grind and some really long boardslides. He had to take off pretty quickly. I didn’t skate too well. Got a few carve grinds, front slashes, but couldn’t do front disaster or a regular grind. It was fun though. Ed had a nice back disaster right when we got there and a nice tailblock. He also had a bunch of frontside grinds and had some fast lines. Saul had a couple of the best runs I’ve seen him do there. His patented quick carve grinds along with stand up back 50s, feeble, frontside bump over the hip, etc. It was sick. We skated about an hour. It was fun.

It’s great having @nolancormier in town for a few days. Check his part in the @metaskateboards video!

After a late morning of trying to sleep in after the Meta premiere I met Nolan at the shop. Then we went to this pond spot that I have somehow never been to. I had new shoes in hopes that a more supportive sole would help my heel feel better. It seemed to help. I basically only did axle stall, front tail and bean plant. The bean plant felt cool. I filmed Nolan get a rad line involving a switch flip, rock ride and pivot to fakie. Filming the line wasn’t easy, lots of swerving and quick pushes.

Then we went to Honey’s Hole in Louisville. I figured Nolan would like it. He did. We both kind of messed around for a bit. I was really tired at the time and didn’t really try much. Nolan started figuring out a line so we started filming. It took him quite awhile to get it, but man it was sick. Filming it was also a lot of work basically because it involved having to push really hard to catch up with him coming in from the sidewalk. Sick line. After he did that I skated a bit more. Got a weak sauce switch boardslide on the parking block, a few axle stalls on the tighter bank and a really weak front slash.

Right after work I went to the Dog Park to meet Dave. I skated for about 30 minutes before he got there. In that time period I really didn’t land much of anything. I mean a few kickflips, fakie flip, halfcab flip, heelflip. But considering how many times I’ve done those and how many more tricks I’ve done I feel my count should be higher. I don’t remember getting much more then that although I know I landed something. Maybe a treflip with the hands down or something. Oh yeah, I was trying some thicker insoles so it did make things a little weird. It got dark real quick once Dave got there. Kind of a bummer. He had just started getting warmed up when we moved next to the one light. I lost interest as the shadow was too much. Dave got a nice varial flip. Then we headed our separate ways and met up later at the Meta vid.
