skate journal: flatground friday fun! (sept 4, 2015 day 239)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 5th, 2015 by corpo

Finally feeling somewhat healthy. After a day of g-chatting at work then a nap I set out to do 10 tricks, 10 tries each. My list is above. I had warmed up a little before that, but hadn’t really done any of the tricks except heelflip and halfcab flip before I started 10×10. It went pretty good I guess. Until I watched the footage that is. Wow my style is bad. The halfcab flip and f/s halfcab heel were first try. The 360 flip and ‘nollie flip’ were 10th try. Everything else was in between. Seeing the footage I probably should have done more attempts to get them looking better. Oh well, live and learn. I was really happy to kind of land a nollie flip because that’s 2 days in a row I landed on it. Gonna keep at that one for sure. The slam on the varial heel got my hip pretty good. It hurts. After the 10×10 I kept skating. Still couldn’t land a nollie tre. So weird. I would eventually land one very sloppily. Other tricks I did. Varial flip rewind, b/s halfcab heel, fakie bigflip, fakie varial flip, a few more 360 flips, more heelflips. Then I hucked tricks I never land for a bit and didn’t get too close to anything. At the end I was hucking cab flips both ways. I wasn’t very close. On the regular cab I decided to go big flip as it seemed like it would help the spin. It did. I did two cab bigfips in a row. Wow! Now before you think it looked like this, remember that it’s me. I was going slow and there was a lot of pivot. Luckily I didn’t film it because in my head it was mostly one motion. I am going to work on it though. Man it’s great to feel healthier.

skate journal: valmont with dave then some flippers in the garage (sept 3, 2015 day 238)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 4th, 2015 by corpo

Feeling a little better finally. I met Dave at Valmont to skate the little manny pads as that building is vacant. Neither of us could ollie at first. We both just ran into the curb and lifted up. I was skating horribly slow. I tried an ollie and it kind of hurt so I just stuck to kickflips for the most part. I know it’s bizarre that kickflips don’t hurt, but ollies do, but I’m not going to complain. I did a bunch of kickflips up the curbs in hopes of a kickflip manual, but it didn’t happen. Dave was struggling with the basics and took awhile to get manual then nose manual. But when he did it was really good. I did a couple regular manuals after awhile and they felt fine. Yeah! Then out of nowhere I did a front 180 nose manual. Easily the longest and best one I’ve ever done even though I was going really slow. Oh well. I tried a few fakie bigflip manuals or kickflip nose manuals. Dave was trying back 180 nose manual. Then the rain came.

best spot ever

I had to pick up Ollie from football shortly so driving home was pointless. So I just skated this curb protected from the rain by a tree. It ruled. I did a slappy crook stall shove out. Kickflip axle stall varial flip out. I was really hyped, I don’t think I’ve done that before. Got super close to kick back tail shove out. Did a kickflip out of a tail stall which might be a first ever, then almost did it out of a front tail, but I had to leave.

After doing some cleaning in the garage I grabbed my spare 8″ board with 42mm wheels and messed around for a bit. It ruled. After about 15 minutes I did a nollie flip. It hyped me up a ton. I love having a real garage again.

skate journal: broomfield park for carleigh’s bday! (sept 2, 2015 day 237)

Happy Saturday! Get out and shred! @jackspanbauer front blunt transfer and 180 switch crooks at Broomfield park.

A video posted by Null Skateboards (@null_skateboards) on

I thought I was feeling better, but when I arrived at Broomfield park I didn’t feel good at all. I played on the quartapotty for awhile, then filmed Riley, Jack and Nolan do some damage on the gnar hip. Then I watched Carleigh carve over the love seat for the first time in the bowl. So sick. Then I started just doing slow kickflips over and over as they didn’t hurt my strained groin. Then we played a game of skate. Darin, Scotty, Bernie and I. We had to go through all of Darin’s 180s before it got going, but it ended up being a good one. All four of us were at SKAT. I even landed a treflip first try horribly. Scotty won the game with a nollie late front foot flip. Perfect. We played another game with no repeats. Darin and I took out the young guns, but Darin took it in the end with tricks like fakie pressure flip and impossible. I had gotten letters on some tricks like pop shove revert, fakie shove, fakie bigspin that I should have landed. Then I filmed Carleigh, Jack and Riley rule the double set. So fun to watch and so stoked that Carleigh nailed the pop shove on her birthday. The last 10 minutes of light was spent trying the Fuller spin on the mellow bank with Garret and Bernie. Both of them got it pretty quick and thought it was fun. They also both did it with a judo kick. Bernie did it like 5 times with a judo kick and they all looked amazing. I think I finally landed one at this point. I was feeling pretty down about it. Bernie also did one with a crail grab. Fun night because of the occasion and crew, but I really hope my body starts feeling better, it’s getting me down.

skate journal: the mellow bank to curb that is way harder to skate then it looks after work (sept 1, 2015 day 236)

Feeling a little less arthritic, a little less pain in the groin I stopped here after work to meet Dave for a shortish session. As I was warming up with my no ollie tricks a car pulled up and it was Ladd. Turns out him and Nolan moved into the apartments in the background of Dave’s photo. So rad! So I went up and told Nolan and he came down and joined Dave and I. Dave and I stuck to the curb, aka the beginner/old fart section. Nolan did for the most part too. This spot is way harder to skate then it looks. Dave and I did boardslides. Dave did back board to fakie then back board 270 out which was so good. Nolan did a lot of tricks on the curb. Crooks, back tail, front tail, front 5-0, back blunt. I took awhile to get a halfcab boardslide, got a weak first try hurricane then at the end of the session got really close to a kick back tail. Nolan did a few tricks on the top bar. Boardslide pop in, front 50, crooks and the rad front smith above. Dave had a sick front hurricane. I tried some line of back 50 then nollie treflip. Got close. At one point I tried to ollie up the curb. Bad idea, the groin strain pain was intense. Ladd joined us after awhile and only skated the young buck section. Front 50, boardslide, front tail. Also some nice treflips on flat. I had to leave to pick Ollie up from football practice. It feels funny being the dad that was out skating too long and was late picking his son up from football.

skate journal: super fun solo session at lafayette park (aug 31, 2015 day 235)

lafayette skatepark

I had the day off work. I was up late seeing Drive Like Jehu destroy it. But since I don’t really drink at all anymore I had no hangover and was feeling pretty good and wanting to skate. I went to Lafayette park around 10:30 not really knowing if I could skate because of my groin pain. I started by doing axle stalls on a bunch of various things at the park. The first of which that was scary was the bank to bank at the end of the snake run. I hit the toilet bowl for awhile and did a basic line of kickturn on the rock, axle stall on the lowest extension, front 5-0 on the parking block. It took a bit and I slammed hard into the pump boob at one point. Having the park to myself ruled. It reminded me that my distaste for skateparks is more related to crowds then terrain. I forced myself to do a tiny scratch grind on the 8′ end of the snake run. I should have tried axle stall, but I’m scared. Then I did a bunch of little spine transfer tricks. Just the typical front 50 to fakie, fakie 50 or pivot then back to fakie. Pretty fun. I got a few noseslides down the little hubba. Somehow ollieing backside doesn’t hurt too much. I had a line of b/s ollie the manhole bump, powerslide, hurricane on the spine thing then noseslide down the hubba. That was a neat feeling. Then I battled noseslides down the 3 stair ledge for awhile. I have never landed it. It seemed like the faster I went the harder I stuck, so I had to find that perfect medium that allowed me to lock in perfect. I eventually landed one that wasn’t the whole thing, but it was fun either way. I ended my awesome day trying cab flips on the flat bank in the back corner. I had a really fun run going into it. Wallie the rock hip, front slash the tiny qp, turn to fakie on the manhole bump, 2 switch pushes then try the cab flip. It was a tough place to do them because there isn’t much room to take angle into the bank. Anyway, I kind of rode away from 2 of them. The first of which was only a halfcab flip that I turned around to forward as I was riding down. The second was closer to a real one, but still wasn’t one clean motion. Oh well, it felt great trying a flip trick and somehow it didn’t seem to strain my groin. I had a blast.

skate journal: no ollies at red curbs (aug 30, 2015 day 234)

red curbs slappy fun

My groin strain is still pretty bad. I wanted to skate, but didn’t want to ollie. I didn’t have much time. I thought about Boulder park and it didn’t get me excited. Then I remembered Red Curbs and got excited. Especially because it was super hot outside. I started with a slappy crook and was immediately happy I didn’t go to Boulder park. I skated for about 45 minutes, never ollie’ing and had a blast. I had lots of ride on front 50s, “nollie” front tails, one to fakie, a nollie back tail that took awhile, switch front noseslides, and ended with a really fun slappy crooks to fakie. It’s so hard for me to not do flip tricks when I’m skating, but I managed. I was happy to leave having not caused any pain to my groin.

skate journal: rampy at josh’s and some broomfield (aug 29, 2015 day 233)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 30th, 2015 by corpo

Moved Rampy to Josh’s house for his surprise party with the help of my awesome friends Riley, Jack and Carleigh. It went pretty smooth and we got it together pretty quick. Josh had no idea it was showing up at his house. So funny. After the party hype died down I skated it for awhile. Didn’t do much other then a hurricane stall. Carleigh almost got a back blunt. Riley almost got front noseblunt rewind. Jack did a bunch of pressure flips. Josh was hyped and started feeling out his ramp.

Then we met up with Drew and a fun crew of former Nebraska residents at Broomfield park. I avoided ollieing for the most part. Had some fun ride on noseslides to 270 out and at the end I skated the weird steep bank and did my first frontside grind on it. It was rad seeing Drew skate again, he is casual yet powerful. The back tails on the steep bank and brick quarterpipe were so good. Carleigh and Riley skated the pool for awhile. The double set got attacked for awhile too. Lots of tricks like nollie flip, hard flip, fakie ollie, ollie, back lip, back smith, all da basics. I wish my body would have been in shape to try it, because the hype was high and I think I could maybe have committed to it. Oh well.

NBSTSSO

Intended to go out to Rampy for my last session before it gets moved, but there were too many hornets in the garage. Ugh. So I went to “The Curb”. It’s my little retreat where I can skate super slow and dork around. The groin tear I have going has gotten worse so I tried not to ollie at all. I ended up getting a new one. “nollie” back tail shove (click the link for action packed video). It actually did hype me up, but the shove out part probably wasn’t good for my groin. I’m old. Then I went in and took Rampy apart while bundled up in case a hornet tried to get me. I was sweating like crazy. I’ll miss you Rampy.

Went to skate Rampy, but a few hornets had gone into the garage after we tore their house down. Ugh. So I decided to do some manuals instead. I was totally annoying India who was trying to do homework. Ha. Got one manaul from the kitchen table to the bathroom. Tight.

skate journal: broomfield park with pain and a fun crew (aug 26, 2015 day 230)

Posted in Skate Journal on August 27th, 2015 by corpo

Right after dinner Carleigh swooped me up and we headed to Broomfield park. Carleigh started in the pool with her girl friend rippers. I’m scared of that thing. I saw Carleigh carve over the stairs pretty quick. I started on the Quartapotty and blue box. Jake and Matt showed. They had skated Safeway ledge. Fun! Jake tried a line of boardslide to fakie the little rail then halfcab noseslide. Matt did a few lines, I saw a front lip the rail then back nosegrind the black ledge. I think I did boardslide then back 50 or crooks. Then we played a game of SKATE. We all got the first kickflip and back shove, but after that it got ugly. I missed the next four tricks, Jake and Matt missed 2 of them. Front shove, fakie flip, heelflip and treflip. I was pretty much ready to leave at that point, but got another turn and did 3 tricks in a row and somehow ended up winning. Ha. f/s halfcab flip, b/s halfcab flip and fakie bigflip. Matt crook bonked everything in the park. Jake learned varial flips. I did some fakie front smith to fakies on the quartapotty. I hadn’t done that there before. Carleigh did the pole jam and almost kickflipped the 6, but settled for an ollie down the double set. At that point my body was starting to shut down. The pain in my groin was bad with every ollie. After messing with some ledge basics I tried Dave’s trick on the mellow bank until I got one. Then I tried it with a Judo kick. That would be so cool I bet. Carleigh got close to back disasters. Other people were ripping. Darin showed which was great.
