skate journal: rock creek for carleigh’s bday (sept 2, 2016 day 246)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 6th, 2016 by corpo

Left work early, took a nap then headed to Rock Creek to help Carleigh celebrate her birthday. It was warm and nice out. Margaret was the first one there and we skated the ramp for a few minutes before Carleigh showed. We skated the ramp for awhile. I skated it alright, but didn’t get too far into the bag. Rob and Jack had shown too. Around then we played a game of SKATE. No surprises, but I was the first one out. I suck lately. My board felt really small too. Carleigh was working on 34 tricks on the ramp then moved to flatground/ledge/rails with us. She did boardslides, noseslides, noseslide shove, shoves, kickflips, a lot. Jack eventually beat Rob with a cab one foot. I tried doing a line of boardslide the flat bar, 360 flip on flat. I might have done that. Jack got front noseslide 270 shove then eventually with a kickflip in. So sick! Rob did halfcab noseslide to fakie so good, maybe halfcab boardslide too. The taller ledge is too tall for me these days. I got front 50 shove and halfcab noseslide going slow on the lower side. I skated flatground a lot and do not remember landing a whole lot. At the end I did land a switch noseslide shove.

skate journal: mostly flatground fun on a rainy night (sept 1, 2016 day 245)

Got out of work early, took a nap, then added a new setup to my collection. This one was a Null 8.25 with 8″ Venture highs and 52mm Spits. I felt better then the day before. Perhaps because I sat down more at work so my legs weren’t so tired. I started at the dog park as it was about to get dark. It felt good to roll around and flip tricks were starting, but it got dark right away and started to rain. So I went to the Valmont garages and started at Redder Curbs. It was fun to cruise around it even though I didn’t seem to land anything. I wanted to do halfcab heel and that garage isn’t too great for flatground. Well, the lighting at least. So I went into Blank Curbs and went to work. It took me about 20 minutes to get the one above. It felt so good I wish I didn’t have to see the footage. Ha. In between tries I mostly posed flippers like nollie flip (kind of close), nollie heel (not close at all, but there was some hope in there) and switch tre (no chance at all). I was not in a terrible mood for once and had fun. As much as I want to skate parks, I really hate the scenes at them sometimes. I don’t like spending my skate time with kids I don’t know playing with scooters. It kills me.

skate journal: longmont park right after work depression (aug 31, 2016 day 244)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 1st, 2016 by corpo

Feeling pretty good throughout the day I went to Longmont park right after work. I was the only one there initially. I was more sore then I anticipated and warming up was super hard. I cruised around. I stretched a little. I felt better. Starting trying some lines, tricks, etc. Did the fun line of cali grind, boardslide, boneless, back tail transfer the hip, b/s flip on the little bank. Dave showed around when I did a switch noseslide 270 shove and a fakie flip. I started thinking of the switch noseslide 450 shove for the game and immediately started getting depressed with each failed attempt. Riley showed up and immediately made me feel old. Manual, switch manual, nose manual, switch nose manual, back 5-0. Dave had a nice nose manual quickly. Then we were on the bank area above for awhile. Riley was doing lines starting with the ledge then the hips. Garrett too. Dave was trying the Creepy spin on the bank. Its’ hard because you have to do a rock fakie and get setup quickly. He got a couple though. He wasn’t hyped on them, but I think they were sick. I was trying fakie tres. Well, this was after failing a couple rock fakies which meant I needed to roll in, but I didn’t have the courage which kicked the depression up a notch. Then not landing fakie tres kicked it up more. I felt really bad being around friends, I probably hid how I truly felt pretty well, but I was really not doing well mentally. I wanted to focus my board and leave it at the park. Instead I tried to do the fun run again and stubbed my thumb bad enough to detach part of my thumbnail. It stung. Riley, Garrett and Dave were having fun. I sat and watched for awhile. Those people are rad. I hope I get out of my funk. Maybe a smaller setup will help!?!?! Ha ha. I do think changing setups hypes me up somehow though. Here I am 244 days into my goal of 366 days. 2/3 of the year gone. It’s been rough lately. I look forward to resting in 122 days.

super popped switch back 3

Didn’t have the best day. After work I slept for awhile, bummed out the family complaining about how exhausted I felt and finally went outside to skate a little. I figured I had to land a switch back 3 before I could consider going anywhere. Liz came out to film me and true to form as of late I couldn’t land it. I eventually just sat my phone on the ground and got a very poor mans switch 3. My phone was filming 120 fps and there is only 1 frame with all 4 wheels in the air. Epic.

After that I chose to skate a skatepark. I went to a very crowded Louisville skatepark. It was crowded with kids, bikers, scooters, skateboards, etc. It’s not my kind of scene at all. I was 25 years older then anyone else except the parents waiting for their kids in cars. But I was able to ignore most of them and remind myself why I am trying to skate parks more. Basically just because the ledges are easier then the crappy ledges anywhere in Boulder. I got front 50, front 50 shove, front 50 front 180 out pretty quick. Back 50 the little ledge in the corner. I had some troubles with crooks, I blame the edge of the ledge sticking up so much. I got long line of front 5-0 (was trying 50), kickflip on flat, back 50 the little ledge, noseslide down the hubba. Kickflip, kickflip to fakie and fakie flip on the bank. Had a first try halfcab noseslide. Skated the little snakerun for a bit, did a front d, posed a kickflip front d. Then started trying switch front noseslide 270 out the hard way. I would land one or two, but not good enough to use them against Josh. I even had the hilarious slam above. I also tried nollie flip and heels between tries. Got remotely close to nollie flip. The bigger board has been feeling big.

Went out to the garage feeling pretty unmotivated. Grabbed the 2 iron and spun some switch back 3 slides around. Had a few, then tried to pop them and slammed. Went inside.

valmont ledge

Went to the research ledge not feeling very motivated on a Sunday afternoon. I felt less motivated when I saw that they sandblasted it, so I went to Valmont. I skated the low part of the ledge slowly, feeling very tired. I did a few switch front noseslides and landed on the back wheels and almost accidentally turned forward (making it a 270 out) so I started trying that. I got really close. Did a couple front 50s on the low part, tried front crooks for awhile, couldn’t do a regular crooks, got one back 50, did the worst switch back 3 slide ever, came close to 360 flips on flat. I was beat.

skate journal: broomfield, bank to curbs marathon (aug 27, 2016 day 240)

dave fuller front blunt at broomfield skatepark

Met Dave at Broomfield park kind of early, around 9am. He was already warmed up and shredding. I was feeling alright and tried to catch up quick. I ended up skating the best I have in awhile, even being somewhat happy about my skating. Dave was doing lines of nollie into the bank, front 50 the ledge, turn around and trying to feeble or 50 the bump to bar. He also had some really good back 50s, slappy feebles, I forget what else. I had some lines with front 50 variations, bonelesses over the down rail, and horrible attempts at back 50. I got a lot of crooks though, a halfcab noseslide. Had better luck on the blue box with back 50s, one little slow scratch fakie nosegrind, did ok with flippers, got closer to learning slappy feeble grinds on the parking block, couldn’t get a front nosegrind on the blue ledge. I still had fun though.

pivot

the best skateboarding style ever. ever.

Then we went to this bank to curb. I did some basics, filmed Dave get a few non-basics (feeble transfer, lipslide 270 transfer, front board transfer). I started trying front pivot kickflip out on a smaller section of the small bank to curb. I probably tried 100 of them. Technically landed it twice, but neither were usable.

One awesome day. #thestubborns

Then we went to this spot. I was so drained. Dave straight killed it and was the least one skating. I don’t know how he can go so long. He got back pivot, front boardslide, front lipslide. This spot is gnar. Rob had some rad boneless variations and was kind enough to film for awhile. Fuzz got a cool line and a fakie flip. My feet were sore so I mostly just dorked around and learned an alley oop fakie 50. It felt really cool.

dave the dave fuller

Feeling slightly better I went to the dog park right after work. I drove through a rain storm, but somehow it was dry. I had started the warm up process when Rob joined. We played a couple games of SKATE that he won. I felt like I should be skating pretty good, but I didn’t land much. And when I did Rob normally did too. He won the 2nd game on fakie 360 shove. It’s hard to remember now what all Rob got me with. I know there were some 360 variations, but he didn’t get too dirty with cab or back 180 one foot. Oh yeah, I had landed all 3 halfcab flips I tried before playing Rob and got double or nothin’d on that trick. Doh. Dave joined as we finished up. We tried a few switch back 360s. Now that I thought I could do them I didn’t get close at all. Dave did a bunch. I did ok on flippers, got a halfcab heel that felt good, some hands down 3 flips. We went over to the manual pads. Rob did the long manual easy. Dave almost died trying switch nose manual. I tried switch 360s and didn’t get close.

Drove to Erie on a cool day right after work. I was feeling totally exhausted. When I pulled into the parking lot the park looked empty, but I ended up taking a little nap in the car. I rolled over to the park to a crowd of ~20 young scooter/biker kids. It was terrible. They seemed to be wherever I wanted to be and they would conglomerate and wax everything. I have almost no patience for this. I’m too old to be sucking on my skateboard surrounded by young kids that have no interest in skateboarding. This is more proof that this skatepark should never have been built in Erie. It’s a waste. It should be in a city with a skate scene, not wasted on scooters. And Erie should have a certified piece of suck. Anyway, I tried to skate. After awhile I stretched and it helped a little, but the constant kids playing weighed on me heavy. I only did a few kickflips, noseslides and 50s on the tiny ledge. Couldn’t do crooks. I resorted to just doing flippers on the top area then going into the park when I landed something. I did get a few at least. Garrett showed around then and I felt a little better. He was bummed on the scene too. But at least he can do 50s all over the place easily. Then he tried to teach me nollie heels for awihle and had some good pointers actually. Doesn’t mean I got close though. Riley showed, did a bunch of perfect nollie/switch heels and about one line before the rain came in. What a horrible session for me. Super depressing. Skating right after work is really hard for me. I need a break. Might have to stop doing this. Although it’s super convenient as I can still be home to help with homework.
