rainbow ledge boulder colorado skate spot

Went to rainbow ledge right after work on another gorgeous September Colorado day. I felt pretty stiff and sore, typical after a full work week. I warmed up with some slappys which were more fun then I remember. I thought of this spot because Jack and I were recently talking about ledges in Boulder and he reminded me this one is really good. I get freaked out by the narrowness on frontside grinds, but I should get over that. Anyway, Dave showed up shortly after and we were both mostly doing slappys for awhile and it was fun. I had a crook and then took a long time to get slow back and front 50s. Dave was going mach 2 to try and slappy the whole thing. He got somewhat close. He had some nice slappy 50 to back tail. I managed an incredibly slow front 50 front shove out and a great feeling crooks on the downhill part. Then I had to leave.

skate journal: valmont ledge and 10×10 flatground (sept 17, 2015 day 252)

Went to Valmont on a beautiful evening. There was a couple older guys skating the manny pad area. They seemed to want their session to be theirs so I just went to the ledge to warm up for 10×10. The warm up went better then I expected. Both ledge and flat. Got pretty far into my flatground and ledge list before doing the 10×10. Noseslide, noseslide to fakie, crooks, front 50, back 50, switch front noseslide, a really fun feeling noseslide 270 out, the worst front tail ever. Then I did the 10×10. It went alright. I have missed b/s halfcab heel and fakie treflip two weeks in a row now. Ugh. I was really close on the nollie bigflip. I went home after that and had a blast with Ollie watching the Broncos. Oh, and I had new PJs. Steezy white/gum.

skate journal: campus with matt and carleigh (sept 16, 2015 day 251)

freaking huge

My legs felt good, but my head wasn’t in the game. This is probably because I took an unnecessary nap after work. I went to campus to meet Matt and Carleigh. I arrived first and was feeling out a line that should be first try no warm up for most people. Like Matt, he did it first try out of the car. Ollie onto a little ledge, kickflip on flat (he added treflip on flat) then front 180 this stupid tiny little curb into the “bank”. I never got the line and it took me a long time before I got a halfway decent ollie up the ledge. The front 180 took way too many tries.

Then we met up with Carleigh at the manny pad parking lot. She wasn’t feeling the crowds. Matt and I weren’t really either. We did some ollies up on to the red pad and tricks off. I had a nice primo landing on a kickflip. Ouch. Almost ollied over the manhole finally. Front 180 up back 180 off. Matt manualed all of it and did a bunch more I can’t remember right now. Carleigh was mostly doing flippers in the parking lot.

#day251. @matthouse pole ride fakie.

Then we went to the bank to fence area where it took about 15 tries between the 3 of us before a clean kickflip to fakie was landed. Wowsers. We would all get good ones. Matt got treflip next. Carleigh did b/s kickflips, but don’t give her props on them. I took a long time to get a 360 flip to fakie, but I was hyped as that is a hard one for me. Carleigh got pop shove to fakie and then needed to take off. I tried some wallies and fence rides, but nothing really worked out. Matt did some rad pole rides to fakie.

Then Matt and I played a game of SKATE. Not a good game, as evidenced by the fact that Matt won. Ha ha. But really, it wasn’t a good game. I started by missing a kickflip and missing the double for nothing. But we still both ended up at SKAT and Matt ended up winning on fakie treflip. After that we sat and chatted for awhile. Pretty cool, Matt is awesome. The most amazing thing for me was being able to get up after sitting post skating without much pain. I’m seriously hyped on that.

skate journal: manuals on a sheet of wood in the garage (sept 15, 2015 day 250)

Ollie learned nose manuals on our sick new manual pad tonight. #🔨🔨🔨

A photo posted by glen gillinghammer (@corpoglenny) on

After a fun night of replacing our garbage disposal I went out to the garage to put some tools away. I did a couple manuals on flat then saw this sheet of wood sitting there and decided to get buck on it. I told Ollie to come check out the huge new manual pad and he was super into it. So we skated it for like 20 minutes and it was a blast. I only did a couple ollies into manual, normally I would just lift up to nose manual or whatever. I ended up getting a slew of tricks. Sure they don’t really count, but yes they do. Nose manual front 180, nose manual back 180, manual front 180, manual back 180, front 180 nose manual, front 180 nose manual 180 out, front 180 nose manual rewind (so fun), back 180 nose manual, back 180 nose manual 180, switch front 180 manual, switch front 180 manual back 180. It was really fun. I was riding my garage board. Ollie had never done a nose manual before. It took him a bit to get the hang of it, but he did. And then he landed a bunch more like nose manual front 180, front 180 nose manual 180 out, front 180 nose manual rewind, manual front 180. Most importantly though he thought it was really fun.

skate journal: safeway ledge almosts (sept 14, 2015 day 249)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 16th, 2015 by corpo

Went to Safeway ledge right after work while India was in ballet class nearby. I was gonna try and film a ledge trick for out instagram game of skate. It wasn’t looking good at all for awhile as 50-50s weren’t even really working either way. After quite some time I settled in on the two tricks above that I never landed. Well, I guess I kind of landed one kick back 50 grind shove out, but I wasn’t locked in to 50-50 and I was going to slow to set with it. The front crooks felt amazing though. I had a couple good slams in there, but quite a few that grinded and I had a chance of getting out of. A lot of them went up into nosegrind and I would fall into 50. I didn’t do too many flip tricks. It was mostly just try these two tricks over and over. Then it was almost time to pick up India so I went to settle for nollie 360 flip. I landed one, but I had to slam a few times first. Ouch.

skate journal: tired mellow huckfest at valmont ledge (sept 13, 2015 day 248)

so not close

Went to Valmont without much time and I was feeling really tired. I had wanted to go to Safeway ledge, but ended up not having enough time. I waxed up the ledge real good to start and it made my normal slappy noseslide routine more fun then normal. But then I went on to not land much and just get wax all over my board. I got most of my basics, but couldn’t do front tailslide. Had trouble getting up on the middle part for frontside grinds. Hucked kickflip noseslides for a bit, halfcab flips noseslides then hucked kickflip crooks for most of the session. I landed came super close to a switch flip at one point. I got into a couple kickflip crooks, but never locked in and grinded. It’s definitely way harder on a ledge then a curb. Duh.

skate journal: broomfield park then loveland park (sept 12, 2015 day 247)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 13th, 2015 by corpo

Went to Broomfield park on a sunny and hot day. I was there first. Carleigh, Riley, Bernie, Scotty and Garrett would join later. I started on the quartapotty for awhile then went into the flow bowl. I actually had fun there. Made myself do axle stalls on the pool coping which I haven’t in awhile. Also got some little fs slashes on the mellow part. Everyone else showed up. There was a lot going on obviously so it’s hard to remember what everyone else did. I was unable to nose manual the blue box. Got into several back 5-0s right away, then couldn’t for awhile. Ugh. Bernie was doing his manual thing. Riley was all over the black ledge. Scotty was killing the handplant combos on the brick qp. Carleigh does front disasters really easy on the brick qp, ollies into the bank all steezy and would get a back disaster or two. Garrett skates the whole park really good. Riley, Scotty, Bernie, Garret and I played a game of SKATE. I did alright in it. I think Scotty would go on to win, Riley had to sit out because of hot pocket pain. I did a few tricks on the black ledge. It was so slick. Took a long time to get back 50, well, I didn’t even do 50, I did 5-0. Typical me. I ended by trying to ollie the six stair. It was cool there was this young kid trying it too. Normally that would annoy me, but he was funner then most kids and really positive. I told him if I landed it he had to get my back. I landed it. He took more tries to get it, but man he was hyped! Ha, it was cool. I haven’t ollied a six in awhile so that felt pretty rad. I would love to some day eventually ollie the double set, but it seems so far away.

count it @corpoglenny

A video posted by Matt House (@matthouse) on

Then I drove up to Loveland park to meet Matt. Riley and crew were supposed to follow, but they didn’t. When I first showed up the park was overrun by clueless scooter kids. It was insane. I almost called Matt from the parking lot to suggest we go somewhere else. Matt was killing some big ollies, front lip the bump to granite flat bar, back 50s down the smaller hubba. I started out alright with some boardslides and noseslides, but mostly wasn’t feeling the crowds. It would clear out though. We had fun. We hit the smaller lane in the street section for awhile. I had a couple of pathetic front 50 attempts down the tiny hubba before getting a few. Matt crooked the long hubba. So gnar. Then we mostly hucked over the A frame. I tried b/s flips for awhile and never landed one. Matt may have taken a whole 10 tries before getting a treflip. He had new trucks and wheels so I guess that explains it. He would get a nollie flip as well before I landed a really bad halfcab flip. I was doing some fun early grabs over the small part of a sideways cone. Dorky, but fun. Then I eventually barely landed the fakie bigflip above. It still felt neat. Kind of weird spending so much time at skateparks on a Saturday, but whatever, I had fun.

skate journal: ‘day off’ with some brief flatground in the garage (sept 10, 2015 day 245)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 13th, 2015 by corpo

Was cleaning the garage and hucked a few flippers here and there. Basically only tricks that I can’t land. Nollie heel, nollie flip, switch flip and switch heel. Surprisingly the switch heel felt the closest. Tried a few switch b/s flips too. That one seems possible as it’s kind of like switch varial flip.

skate journal: valmont yet again with some new manuals for dave and i (sept 11, 2015 day 246)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 13th, 2015 by corpo

I worked from home because I had to be on a 7am call. I ended up basically being on the phone for 9 hours straight. I was pretty tired and wanting to skate something other then Valmont, but Dave insisted and didn’t have time to drive elsewhere. Starting out was rough. Really rough for me. I’m not sure why, but I could barely get up the curbs and it took me like 30 minutes before I landed a manual. I added to the fun by taking out the metal grate from the long manny pad to make for some gap/combo options. Dave got manuals and nose manuals way quicker then me, but was struggling with other things. He hucked a lot of 180s out of manuals and stuff which could make for some new manuals soon. He started trying nollie front shove manuals and got one. So rad. I was trying fakie bigspin manuals which I had never done. I had a brief blast of awesome as I landed a nollie big flip then the fakie bigspin manual. I was hyped. Coming the other way I was trying manual to ollie over the huge 1 foot gap (ha) then 360 flip off the curb. I had done a few b/s flips off that felt rad. Dave started trying fakie bigspin manuals and he too came through with it. That’s two new manual tricks for him in one day and one for me. We were hyped. Dave was doing lots of kickflips. I was hucking a lot of flippers and getting close to fakie 3 flips. Dave had to leave and as he was pulling out I finally got the manual to ollie over the gap then a 6 point landing 360 flip off the curb (4 wheels, 2 hands). We counted it. Then it was off to Crisis to see Sabotage 4! It’s a good one.

skate journal: warm up at stonehenge, more valmont with lots of flippers (sept 9, 2015 day 244)

Posted in Skate Journal on September 10th, 2015 by corpo

stonehenge

After sparring with Liz a bit I drove off to take some steam off on the concrete. I went to Stonehenge to warm up which was fun. I went through the basics doing both fs and bs. Rock, axle, pivot, smith, disaster (back disaster took me a long time) and tail.

Then I went to Valmont yet again. I wanted to hit a ledge and flatground and didn’t have much time so why bother driving to a crowded skatepark. I started at the ledge and went through some basics and did some flippers in between. It was fun. Crooks, back 50, front 50, front tail, halfcab noseslide. Close to front nose. I did several flippers, came super close to nollie inward heel. Had a fun ollie or two of the loading dock and a front 180 then went and skated flatground with my new 10×10 list:
fakie bigflip
360 flip
fakie 360 flip
nollie 360 flip
bs halfcab heel
nollie flip
nollie varial flip
fs bigspin
varial heelflip
rick flip
I landed fakie bigflip, 360 flip, nollie 360 flip and nollie varial flip. My phone ran out of space halfway through though so looks like I have time to redo it before Friday. I’d like to get rid of fs bigspin as I don’t really care to learn that one.
