skate journal: garage hucking on a windy night (jan 7, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 8th, 2019 by corpo

On a cold and windy night I went into the garage and hucked the straight 4 that I can’t do over and over. Nollie flip, switch flip, switch heel, nollie heel. After awhile I was closest to nollie heel so I kept at it and got so close. But it just didn’t flip enough. I was wearing some thick cupsoles in hopes of being less sore, it worked.

skate journal: broomfield meetup turned all day (jan 6, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 8th, 2019 by corpo

It was windy and cold in Boulder so I took longer to get ready than I should have. I went to meet Sean at Broomfield park where it was way warmer and sunny. I arrived first. There were some beginner longboarders learning how to push and they kep standing in the way of the quartapotty or blue ledge. When I almost snapped they left. Warmups were whatever. I had done front 50s and a bad back 50 on the blue ledge. Sean showed and after a bit more warming up we played a warm up game of SKATE. It went alright. I remember getting a treflip which always makes me happy. I don’t remember much more than that, but he won on nollie back heel. Then we mostly skated the black ledge for quite some time. I got the slowest back 50 ever done, but it was the first one I’ve done that tall in awhile. Sean went through is bag of tricks and started on a new one. Nollie back nosegrind nollie back bigspin out. He came really close, but never got it. Jack and Carleigh showed. Carleigh was on the boardslide black ledge, front d, back d the brick qp tricks right away. She also got a super good back 50 on the blue ledge. Jack was slaying as he has been lately. First try noseblunt the double set rail, no comply tailslides, everything. I got a first try front 5-0 shove. It’s been awhile. I also got a really bad front 5-0 followed by a 360 flip out of the bank that felt great. After awhile I lost interest in the black ledge and was chilling briefly when I was challenged to a game of SKATE by a somewhat older skater. He mentioned how old he was turning 30. Ha. Anyway, neither of us were very consistent, but it allowed me to land some tricks. I got him with halfcab flip, fakie bigflip, 360 flip, varial flip and halfcab heel. It was fun. Everyone else was still ripping. I sat in the nice sun and watched. I had mentioned how much I liked my setup and shoes. Crazy! That probably means I’ll change soon.

skate journal: mellow campus jumping with jack and carleigh (jan 5, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 6th, 2019 by corpo

Feeling lazy and run down on a Saturday I met up with Jack and Carleigh at India’s dorm on a very nice day. There were some cars and lots of snow around limiting the spot some. We mostly did tricks off the little drop. Well, Jack and Carleigh did “tricks”, I just did ollies. I was wearing some new shoes. Lakai Sheffields. They are very comfy and I have high hopes for them. Jack rattled off lots of tricks. Kickflip, shoves, varial heel, hardflip, impossible, cab, fakie ollie, no comply 180, etc, etc. The crack nollie heel was first try on film. Funny thing is I thought he was gonna go the other way after the land so that’s why I’m so far away. Carleigh got kickflip and pop shove, I just didn’t happen to have the phone filming for those. She also did 180s. I had a couple lines that sound okay on paper, but luckily were not filmed. Ollie off the drop, kickflip axle stall a step, nose manual. Going the other way a terrible f/s halfcab flip then manual then a sketchy ollie up where we were ollieing down. Jack also did the crack nollie tre which is insane. Shortly after that Ella broke through here chain and harness to chase a squirrel. It was insane. I kind of lost interest in the area and went over to the nearby 2-3 and did the firecracker then ollie. It was weird how scared I was to ollie the 3. I need to put some thicker insoles in these shoes I think. Anyway, fun mellow day. Jack had cracked his board so we left. I did a slappy crook on the meetup curb and we was out.

skate journal: flatground friday struggles (jan 4, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 6th, 2019 by corpo

On a super nice Friday I skipped out for a lunch break. The skatepark was kinda wet and had some scooter kids, so I chose the more dry hockey rink. I was incredibly sore when I started and almost called it after taking so long to get a kickflip. I went on to skate slow and without confidence for an hour. It was so nice out it made up for the sucking. I came close to nollie tre. Landed terrible heelflip and 360 flip. I really hate these shoes and plan on retiring them.

skate journal: warm night struggles under the engineering building (jan 3, 2019)

Posted in New Deck, Skate Journal on January 4th, 2019 by corpo

On a warm night that started in the mid 40s I drove into campus in search of dry. The meet up curb was snowy, the rock ledge was snowy, ugh, so I ended up going under the engineering building. It was dry, but the lights weren’t on over the double bank section which was a flip trick bummer. I started with a back 180 up where I wallie nollie flop off. The wallie nollie flop felt pretty fun though. Then I went for the back 50 off the 3 stair which is normally a first try thing. But this time it wouldn’t grind and it made it tough. I tried back 360s when I would bail. Got kinda close. What a random trick to try. I got a few back 50s and tried to back it with an ollie down the next crack ridden 3 stair. I slammed hard catching a crack right before the ollie down 3. It was close to getting too hurt to skate, but I got up and decided to ollie up the 3 stair instead. Now I’m never going to say I’m good at ollieing up 3 stairs, but this 3 is harder than most. Cracks and long. But as you can see I would eventually get it. And man it felt great. Street skating can be very rewarding.

Next I went up to this little ledge. From the looks of it, it’s been skated more, but it was quite sticky. I told myself 10 ledge tricks before I could bounce. I got boardslide, noseslide, noseslide to fakie, switch noseslide to forward, front nose to fakie, front nose 270 out, took awhile to get a crook, switch front nose, and halfcab noseslide jib. I guess that’s 9. Maybe I forgot one. I posed some flip tricks in between. I was pretty sore from the battle of ollieing up the 3 stair. I had put some old bones STFs on. They were small, but they felt better to me then those soggy big Spits.

skate journal: more playing on the putter in the garage (jan 2, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 3rd, 2019 by corpo

Went out to the garage late in the evening on a cold/snowy night. I tried to skate my real setup, but the soft wheels and destroyed tail felt terrible. I wasn’t really motivated at first, but then I just started to huck and it came together. I had a 360 flip early on, couldn’t hardflip. Started hucking sex changes the hard way, but never got both feet on. My frontside flips are still terrible. I can’t heelflip in these shoes because of how thick the heel is. The 3 shove took awhile, but felt fun. The halfcab heel took awhile to get and I called it then.

skate journal: new tricks for the new year on steelyards curb (jan 1, 2019)

Posted in Skate Journal on January 2nd, 2019 by corpo

On a very cold day New Years Day I went to the Steelyards garage to meet up with Sean and Carleigh. I got there first. It was colder in there than I remember. But man, that curb is so fun. I was getting into some grinds pretty quickly. Sean showed next. We brought his flat bar out that is pretty tall, it took me a few tries to boardslide it. I had done some basic flippers, but nothing much, some basic curb tricks, but not much. Sean came out and was immediately doing his tricks. I guess I should say he did at least do his dynamic stretching first. Carleigh showed shortly after that. She made boardsliding the flatbar look easy. I had to really focus to ollie that high. We were all doing our own thing for awhile. I got a front 50 back 180 out, nollie front 5-0 and some switch crook jibs. Sean was doing variations of the line in the video. Lots of pop and energy. Carleigh started in on learning back 50s and was getting closer with each try. I filmed Sean do his line and Carleigh try back 50s. In between tries I started hucking a dream trick front shove back 50. I would eventually start committing and several minutes later I kind of got it. Carleigh got back 50 a few tries later. Sean learned switch front 5-0 too. That’s new tricks for all of us to start the year!

skate journal: some garage dorking on the putter (dec 31, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 31st, 2018 by corpo

On a cold and snowy afternoon I went into the garage with the intention of trying a new trick. I had though of no comply back shove body varial. My feet were hurting so I started with some old cupsoles that I haven’t skated to completion yet. Some old PJ shoes that are too tight/stiff. They worked for awhile, but started to hurt. Sometime after the slam that hurt more than it should I switched back to the Busenitz vulcs. I got the no comply trick and was delighted to follow it up with a treflip (well, mostly a treflip). I also did a bad heelflip, posed switch flips and fakie hardflips and went off to get dinner.

skate journal: slappy morning then broomfield park (dec 30, 2018)

Posted in New Trucks, New Wheels, Skate Journal on December 31st, 2018 by corpo

On a really nice morning I showed up at the newly repaved EBRC parking lot where Dave, Ed and Saul were already slapping them grinds. There were a few different sections. I was getting used to new trucks and wheels. Well, the only part of the truck that were new were the hangers so it wasn’t really that different. I had some new Spitfire 52mm classics too, they felt big too. Argh. We went over to the banked area. It was fun to carve, try to tailslide, etc. Saul did the crazy slappy over the death box which was crazy. He was slappying all over the place. Some manuals around the bank were had, Dave almost got front tailslide shove, Ed was popping backside ollies. There was a fun little gap there too. You just had to dodge goose crap. I had a fun kickflip up then ollie the gap. Dave ollied it too, he also hung up on it and took a good slam I guess. Dave kickflipped off the curb then him and Saul bounced. I was stoked how casual Dave’s kickflips were. Ed and I skated awhile longer. I did the kickflip on the bank. Then we went back to the longer slappy curb. Man it’s good. Ed has the best frontside slappys. I got a couple real backside ones, I’m normally not up on it enough.

Then I went to a crowded Broomfield park to meet Sean and eventually Carleigh. There were quite a few older skaters there. Dudes I’ve seen around for years, but never knew. They had tiny setups and it stoked me out. After doing a brief warm up on the quartapotty and blue ledge Sean and I played a game of SKATE. It didn’t go so good for me, I might have gotten one letter on Sean. Since it was over so quick we went for another one, no repeats. This game was awesome! Sean was a gentleman and didn’t get me with tricks I’ve never done. I got letters on tricks I can do though like both halfcab heels, backside flip and something else. I was really surprised to answer back with a first try fakie heel. Especially considering how regular heelflips weren’t working. I was able to get some letters on Sean though. Fakie bigflip, fakie varial flip, 360 flip and nollie tre! I was hyped to get those tricks. We both took awhile to get last tricks. I was going for fakie tre, he was going for Rick flip. Both of us were constantly close, but he got his first and I came close to the Rick flip, but didn’t get it. Super fun game. We mostly skated the blue lurb after that. I didn’t get much. I got a mirror line. Nollie front tail, axle to fakie on the qp, halfcab noseslide. Sean did his front 180 nose manual switch back 180 out so good. Then he tried to mirror out a switch front 50 with a switch back front 50. It took him a long time because he couldn’t switch back 50. But he did get a couple good ones after Carleigh showed up. Carleigh did some good front 50s, kickflips, ollies. I gave up on hard stuff and tried to line out in a way I haven’t before. I did nollie front tail on the blue ledge, boardslide transfer the brown ledge, axle to fakie the qp, fakie 50 the blue ledge. I had done a few flip tricks too. I was really tired and sore when it was all over.

(pain level 4/10 started okay, but by the end I was really hurting)

skate journal: fossil creek in the cold (dec 29, 2018)

Posted in Skate Journal on December 31st, 2018 by corpo

It was super cold in the morning so I sold boards to Skate Ratz and MRKT, got some food and eventually made it to Fossil. There were a couple beginners up top when I got there, but they left. I started really slow, it was still quite cold out. After awhile I had some fun trying the line above with ollie up then front 50. It came kinda quick so I went for the shove out which didn’t come quick. Since it was so cold out the phone almost died after filming for only 10 minutes. Next I forced myself to ollie up the 3 stair. It took awhile. After that I mostly hit the main ledge. I was bumming on my wide wheels because I couldn’t lock in to crooks to save my life. It was so annoying, that ledge is normally my favorite ledge to crook. Good bye wide wheels, I don’t really like you anyway. I got a first try back 50, but it was more of just an axle stall. Still, I was happy about it. I had halfcab noseslide, front 50s too. Man, I really didn’t do much. Seemed like I was trying pretty hard and having fun though.

(setup null 8.25 lazer deck, 5.8 venture black icon trucks, doh dohs bushings (blue 88a barrel bottom one, yellow 92a small top one), no washers inside each axle, spitfire f4 99a radial 52mm blue/yellow swirl wheels, adidas busenitz vulc b/w size 12, stock insoles)
