skate journal: Downtown Boston and sunshine! (june 25, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 28th, 2011 by corpo

We started out at this spot. It looked fun like you could skate the lower one as a bank and do slides. Not so easy. It was gnarly. I don’t know the last time I was that humbled by a spot. Dave Bachinsky is seriously good. He did switch front 180 to manual to back 180 into the lower bank. That isn’t possible. It’s an 8 foot drop from the top of the ledge down to the bank and the bricks are rough! It’s insane. Pat rolled in easy. i worked up to it and did it. Matt dropped in. Joe did some f/s ollies then nearly died on the run out of the drop in. Almost worst case scenario. he lied in the grass in pain for a good 5 minutes. ouch. Then we left for downtown.

We parked right next to the infamous PJ Ladd flatground spot and then skated around the city for awhile. We didn’t really hit much until we ended up at Eggs again which is just fine because that place rules. I had thought about how I wanted to do a run that involved ollieing the 3 stair then crooksing around the corner ledge so i went to work on back 50s to start it. Took forever, but once I started getting them a few tries later I did back 50, ollie the 3 (which was surprisingly fun) then crooks for a couple feet in the corner. Rob nailed some front tails. Joe threw down some great lines. Matt slayed everything. Pat played SKATE with the locals. Charlie showed up after awhile. At the end Rob, Matt and I played a game of SKATE (Matt won) then ollied an egg which wasn’t easy for me. Oh yeah, I forgot I tried about one hundred front 5-0 kickflip outs and never got close. maybe two of them you could tell what I was trying. I also did a few 360 flips and cracked my board on one. Not too bad though (hey, it’s a Null! ha). Then we cruised back toward the car and did some sight seeing.

Then we ended up at the PJ flatground spot. This was the spot I wanted to skate more than any place in Boston. The window sills are knobbed now unfortunately, but still, this is the spot where the best line in skateboarding history went down. It felt cool to skate it. Joe and I started by trying fakie ollies up the curb then trying to do halfcab flips after. Took us a minute, but we got it. Not quite a fullcab 540 flip, but whatever. Next up Matt and I tried to 360 flip the manhole that is at the end of the PJ line. It’s way closer to the wall then the video shows. Matt was trying to one up PJ with a switch tre, but never got it. I never go the regular tre either. We ended up all trying lines down the hill which was amazing. My best was fakie bigflip, pop shove, kickflip the manhole. Pat did some crazy lines obviously. Matt and Rob tried manuals and nose manuals respectively. I tried forever to get front 180 up the curb, fakie bigflip, pop shove, 3 flip the manhole. But I never got the 3 flip. I as really close. Super fun session.

Next up we went to this ledge that smells like chocolate/mint because it’s behind a chocolate factory. Brian would never survive here. After falling pushing switch and accidently shooting my board into a huge puddle of water I thought I would sit this one out. But Matt, Joe and Charlie were ripping so I had to join in. I ended up getting a run of halfcab flip, noseslide, crooks and I was hyped. Matt did crazy stuff. Nollie crooks, smith grind, etc. Joe landed everything. Front 50 bigspin, front 50 front board pop out. Those dudes killed it. We were all so beat and the rain started so Black Ice wasn’t an option later on. We rested.

skate journal: Wet Eggs, mist skating and Black Ice in Boston (June 24, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 28th, 2011 by corpo

After a decent game of SKATE near Pat’s house we went to Eggs. Carleigh unfortunately had to leave. Going to Eggs was unanimous though. The spot looked epic to say the least and it didn’t disappoint at all. We got cut short due to the rain/mist picking up. But the session lasted a long time and we had a blast. Matt and Joe got so many ledge tricks and they busted most of them here. I had a couple lines I was hyped on. Noseslide, crooks, boardslide the 3 stair ledge (take that PJ). Front 5-0, front board, front 180 down the 3. Joe had some mean front smiths. Matt had some sick nollie crooks. Super fun.

We did some sight seeing, and rolled around in the rain. Rob did a ridiculous boneless to manual down a hill. Then we ended up at AQ where I took a long time to do the manual above, but no time to do PJ Ladd’s trick first try:

After that we did some chilling then went to another spot that could be characterized as completely incredible, Black Ice:

Yes, this spot is real.

We skated Black Ice for about an hour before the rain kicked in again. It was a blast. Rob had some amazing front slashes on the bank to curb. Everyone was ripping. I can’t remember much. I got a line I was super hyped on though. Wallie from a curb into the bank, front tail slide over the grate, then backside flip on a bank. It really hyped me up. So much fun.

skate journal: Ramp skating in Boston (June 23, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 28th, 2011 by corpo

Not a bad day for a rain day after partying so hard at Dinosaur Jr. After awhile we ended up at Orchard skate shop which impressed all of us. They have a ramp inside and let us skate for as long as we wanted to. We probably skated for two hours as we were waiting for Rob to show up. Carleigh ripped it. Matt and Joe came through with their moves and I kind of just blew it. Pat skated it a little. The vibe was great though and it was so cool to be skating instead of complaining about the rain.

Matt blunt to rock fakie, but mostly just a cell phone shot to show the ramp.

After some driving we ended up at this skatepark called Boardwalk I think. It was crowded. Rob and I skated the ramp the whole time. Carleigh joined us for a long time, but skated the ledge with others as well. There was some dudes ripping. Joe and Matt were some of them. Pat skated flat mostly, but managed to do a fakie blunt bigspin out. Ridiculous. After some troubles warming up I basically did every single Rampy trick I’ve done. Even tricks like fakie pivot fakie, fakie hurricane, front feebs, back 5-0 fakie. Hyped! Near the end Rob, Carleigh and I got in a race for a beer. Carleigh was trying kickflip rock fakie, and Rob and I were both trying kickflip pivot (or axle stall). Carleigh was first, but it took a long time and Rob and I were solid sweat before we gave up. So fun. Kind of funny that I only skated Ramp while in Boston though.

skate journal: Go Skate Day (June 21, 2011)

Man it’s been sooo long since this day and I’m finally getting to the journal entry. The morning started early with Nate and Carleigh at Lafayette for awhile. Nate slammed super hard within 30 seconds and almost ended his day with a bash to the knee. But he stuck with it and we skated for awhile. I don’t remember much of anything other than I finally got an axle stall on the rock in the little qp, Nate boardslid the little rail and back 50’d the smaller hubba, Carleigh pop shoved into the mellow bank super easy.

After that was the event with Crisis which would be more work than skate for me. Which was just fine because there was a huge turnout. After playing judge for awhile and doing some filming we mostly played SKATE. But it turned into doing a trick 6 times. Fuzz was always the first to 6. We did treflip, heelflip, halfcab flip and maybe something else. I didn’t mind having a mellow session considering I was leaving for Boston the next day!

skate journal: Sussex Fail on Fathers Day (June 19, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 20th, 2011 by corpo

Had some down time on Fathers Day and went skating. Picked up Carleigh and headed towards Sussex ledge which is on my ‘by 40 list‘. We warmed up messing around on some little blue manny pad we found near the dumpster behind Ross. It ended up being fun. We each got mannies and I got a nose manny. I also got a couple front lipslides and Carleigh ollied up to powerslide on it. Then we went over to the ledge and the failing began. Carleigh started slow with noseslides, but by the end was sliding over half of the ledge. I got relatively close to front 50 a few times. Had a couple good slams and lots of mental breakdowns. Still, it was fun to finally try a trick on my list and I guess the tricks on that list aren’t supposed to be super easy anyways (for me). A little more speed would help me, but the double sided thing scares me. Mostly when I would get on it my balance wouldn’t last til the end of the ledge. Maybe next time.

skate journal: Niwot High / Longmont little park with TF (June 18, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 20th, 2011 by corpo

A beautiful Saturday. I had to get a bunch of Null stuff done before I could skate. Then I went and picked up Carless and eventually met Neil and Lazer at Niwot High. Carleigh and I took awhile get going. Actually, she got blinded by the sun and had to chill out. I got a few lines I was happy with. The first one was crooks, kickflip, front 50 shove. Neil and Lazer had shown up by now. The next line I was working on was halfcab noseslide, nollie tre, front board pop out. I managed to get it, but all three tricks were horrid. My next line might be my favorite though. Back 50, heelflip, front 5-0. Neil and Lazer were cruising around too. Neil had some good lines with kickflip, front 50, front lip or front tail. Lazer had some moves too. For awhile we all tried front nosegrinds. Lazer got it. Neil and I got close. I haven’t done that trick on a real ledge ever. We eventually left for the little Longmont park which is so fun.

Neil had puckered out and didn’t really skate. The rest of us seemed pretty motivated though. Lazer busted a bunch of tricks over the hip. The fakie ollie looked terrifying. He also boardslid the square rail and boardslid both curved ledges. Carleigh got 180 nosegrind to forward on the bump to ledge and her first ever no comply 180. Stoked. She also learned front tailslides over the hip. I skated hard and did quite a few things I was hyped on. First thing was a line of tailslide over the hip, b/s flip on the little bank, kickflip fakie on the next one. I also got a sloppy bigflip on the bank. I managed a bad front 50 on the straight out ledge. Neil and I failed to ollie up the big ledge. I tried it in a line with back 50’ing the ledge before it, but failed. I tried a few slow front 5-0 kickflips out and didn’t get close. I did a few manuals off the tall ledge which felt good, I normally set it down before a drop. The last couple things were frontside h/c flips followed by noseslide bails down the curved hubba and a took-way-to-long f/s flip over the mini hip. Super fun day though.

skate journal: Broomfield park with Carleigh, Max, Sean and new shoes (June 17, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 20th, 2011 by corpo

I’ve completed my second week of standing all day at work. It’s not easy and I was tired. After a trip to Meta to sell some boards and then to pick up Carleigh (since she had gotten in a fender bender) we went to Crisis. I have been complaining a lot about my Fushioned Square Two’s and Fuzz had gotten some of the regular ones in and had ordered an extra pair for me. I guess your friends know what’s best for you as they felt great the second I put them on. We were watching the new Transworld video when Max and Sean walked in. Stoked. After another viewing of the video we went to Broomfield park. Carleigh and I were both super tired and she had more reasons to be out of it. Max and Sean were killing it as usual. Max ollied the square rail down to the middle of the double set then back 180’d the second set. In reality, that isn’t possible. Carleigh was mostly just trying no comply 180s as she has never really landed one. She got close. I don’t remember doing much of anything until Sean, Max and I skated the longer banked manny pad. Max did ollie up, 360 flip to switch manual down. Ridiculous. He was also being insanely fun and awesome to everybody. Max rules. At one point Max was like “3 flip now Glen!” and somehow I landed it. Loving the new shoes! He was also doing 360 flips with his hands in his pockets. It was funny. Sean and I did kickflips like that which was weird enough. I took awhile to finally get the ollie up to rock to b/s flip out. At the end of the session I also managed to do a bigflip out. It wasn’t pretty though. So bad in fact that Carleigh made sure not to acknowledge it. Oh well, it was a fun little tired session.

skate journal: flatground then campus with carleigh and jake (June 16, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 17th, 2011 by corpo

After work, a nap, a nice dinner, some basketball with Ollie and some laundry folding Jake and Carleigh arrived around 8 and we skated flat for awhile. A game of SKATE ensued. I managed to win it. Got heelflip, 3 flip, backside flip, fakie bigger flip and a few more. Carleigh almost learned no comply 180s. We posed some more tricks as we debated a spot. Fuzz had said Broomfield was dry and Carleigh and I had already talked about campus so we went there. We started out here at a little curb then two stair. Jake got the ollie, ollie first. Then Carleigh. Then me. Jake added front 180 up the 2. I tried ollie, kickfip, but didn’t get it. Next up we skated the little ledge that is right next to that. Jake and I got noseslides and Carleigh got wrecked trying to front 50 it. She claims that the ledge is easy to skate, but she’s wrong. It’s dark, got a weird approach, and just plain sketchy. She almost got the 50. I got a crooks pop out on it (would rather grind the whole thing). Next we went to the student center. Jake came super close to ollieing up the 4. I got a line of ollie up the two, back 180 down the 2, then ollie down the 4. Carleigh ate shit ollie’ing down the 4 then rolled off in anger. After a bit we joined her down below in the lit flatground area where she was learning 180 no complies ( I think she got one?). I tried a bunch of treflips and to ollie onto the tall planter and survive the skate stopper. Nope. The one time I got on it my front wheels locked in and I went forward. Doh. I slammed a bunch actually. I tired a bunch of 3 flips and fakie 3 flips. Never got the fakie one. After standing at work so much I don’t get as tired out skating anymore.

skate journal: downtown denver with carleigh (June 14, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 15th, 2011 by corpo

Had a somewhat busy day at work and was super tired when I got home. Instead of resting I had to unload another 250 boards which took a couple hours then I had to bolt immediately to 303 to sell some of them. I was so tired and barely made it before closing time. After that I met up with the Crisis crew at a ledge for a bit. A couple of the Crisis dudes busted some moves. I kinda posed some hardflips and watched Carleigh stand there and watch her board go into a drainage gutter. It was amazing.

So yeah, we were both already a bit tired, but we headed downtown and had some fun. We started around 17th & Welton and quickly ended up at a tall marble ledge that was absolutely perfect. So perfect it was kinda spooky. Is it a big bust or something? We ended up skating it til we felt like leaving so maybe we got lucky or maybe it’s gonna be a regular spot. I was able to do back noseslide first try then almost every crooks I tried after that. Carleigh pulled some magic out and did a back noseslide yanked up into fakie nosegrind. She didn’t call it in advance, but oh well, it was sick. She also got back nose shove and I got front 50 before getting frustrated wanting to do more.

Next we ended at this metal pole/barricade thing. It’s like a low trash can and I wanted to ollie it soooo bad. I actually almost put it on my list for 40 years, but since it was Denver I decided against it. Carleigh gave a couple goes too, but couldn’t commit. She has the luxury of not knowing how to pose ollies over stuff (I’m seriously jealous) and couldn’t commit. I took awhile to get close and had a couple that were really close. One that I landed on even. Carleigh was stoked for me and yelled loud. It was awesome. I thought I could do it. But between lots of Rockies game pedestrians and me getting tired I didn’t have it anymore. Doh. I’d like to. I did have some good feeling kickflips in between tries as well.

We ended it with a little flatground session. I got quite a few tricks including my favorite which is the fakie bigflip. I know I don’t pop it, but I love the pivot around at the end. Love it. I struggled on treflips and Carleigh got really close to front shove on flat which she’s only done once or twice before.

skate journal: Flat in front of the house (June 13, 2011)

Posted in Skate Journal on June 14th, 2011 by corpo

Skated flat for awhile in front of the house. It was a super nice night and there was lighting and a storm in the far distance to the south. My legs were sore from standing all day at work again. I got into it after awhile though. I still dislike the Fusions, but I plan on skating them to their death (which might not be so long judging by their destruction already). Kickflips still felt weird and it took awhile to get some other tricks I normally land like fakie bigflips. But in the end I did a couple lines I was hyped on. Fakie bigflip, pop shove, treflip (tre was HORRIBLE). Heelflip then nollie treflip (maybe my best one evs). I also got a few other tricks like fakie flips and halfcab flips. I tried a few hardflips and didn’t get close, but still managed to hit the side of my ankle pretty good. Oh well, it was a fun little session.
